Jaya's Story

Special needs dog looking for her retirement home

Jaya has had one of the hardest—maybe the hardest—lives we've ever witnessed. She has every reason to be shut down, fearful, or angry at the world... but instead, she has the purest heart, the biggest smile, and nonstop tail wags (so enthusiastic they sometimes knock her right over ).

Jaya spent her entire life as an indoor/outdoor dog in Detroit, having litter after litter. Being a mom is all she ever knew. When she came to us, she didn't just come alone—she came with three 3-day-old puppies and three 6-month-old puppies. When we say back-to-back, we truly mean it

As if that wasn't enough, Jaya was hit by a car, and her injuries were left untreated for far too long. Because of that, much of the damage is irreversible. Thanks to ongoing alternative treatments, Jaya is not fully paralyzed and can walk on her own—but she does need help. She requires assistance with things like getting on and off furniture, going potty, and often needs to be carried from place to place.

Despite everything, Jaya's spirit is unmatched.

She loves other dogs and truly thrives when she's surrounded by them. She will happily mother any dog—big, small, three-legged, doesn't matter—and can usually be found cuddled up with them or bossing them around from her throne (aka the couch ). She can be a bit much for some dogs, but most quickly accept her for the bossy old granny she is.

Jaya does require monthly visits (every 3–4 weeks) to her holistic vet for treatments that help maintain her mobility and strength. These currently cost around $250/month. However there was a time when she was going 1-3x a week when she was first rescued to get to this stable point. A huge thank you to the generous sponsor who got her to where she is today and we can only hope she has many more great years to come stabilized! She's a total celebrity at the vet—walks in like she owns the place and fully expects everyone to agree

Her personality is larger than life. Jaya has opinions, and she has no problem sharing them.
Standing in the kitchen? Obviously you're making her a snack—hurry it up.
Walking down the hall? Turn around and pick her up, she's coming too.
Going outside? Hold on—she's ready for her mid-day sniff session

She's vocal, hilarious, and unapologetically bossy. And honestly? After everything she's been through... she's earned it. Being her “servant” (we mean parent ) is more than worth it.

Caring for a special needs dog can be demanding—we won't pretend it isn't. There will be hard moments. But we can promise you this: to know Jaya is to love her, and being loved by her is worth every single second. Her cuddle game is elite, and she fully believes in being the big spoon... so really, it's a fair trade.

Jaya is about 12 years young. She is spayed, potty trained, a professional couch potato (with a loud opinion), and would thrive in a home with other dogs and a human who can commit to her needs—both physically and emotionally (yes, including responding to her dinner demands in a timely manner ).

If you think you can give this incredible girl the soft, loving place she deserves to land for the rest of her days... please apply.

Click on more about us to fill out our adoption application.

A ReJoyceful Animal Rescue's Adoption Policy
Thank you for considering A ReJoyceful Animal Rescue for your new fur baby! If you are interested in one of our animals, please fill out an application on our website at www.rejoycefulrescue.com for that animal. Please allow up to 72 business hours after submitting your application for a response. Our application process is as follows: 1. After your application has been received and reviewed, the foster parent of the animal will reach out to see if you have any specific questions regarding the animal. Prior to setting up a meet and greet, we will complete a vet check to ensure all animals currently in your home are up to date on vaccines, spayed or neutered and in good health. 2. Once your application has passed a vet check, we will set up a time for a meet and greet. The meet and greet is no-obligation and simply allow the foster to meet you and for you to meet them! We always host our meet and greets on a "neutral ground" if there are other animals and ensure proper introductions are done to allow safety for all. 3. Last but not least, if we both decide you might be the perfect furever family, we will reach out to set up a time for a home check. The purpose of the home check is simply to ensure the animal is heading to a safe environment. If necessary, our foster may point out items that can cause health issues or potential safety issues. 4. Once this process has been completed and approved, our finalization team will prepare an electronic contract for your signature confirming the adoption. Our adoption fee is $450 for dogs and $200 for cats. We ask, whenever possible, the hand off of your new fur family member is to be done at a local Petsmart to allow us to receive additional charity dollars to help our foundation. Your foster family will provide more information on this. We appreciate your patience during the process and pride ourselves on the best possible placement for our fosters. Please note, our applications are not "first come, first serve" and we will review each application equally to ensure the best home is selected for our animals. If you have any questions at any time, please email info@rejoycefulrescue.com.
