Janie's Story

Janie is a very cute but shy girl who is looking for a quiet home to call her own. She is a small size at about 18lbs and possibly a Dachshund mix given her oblong body. She came from a place with too many animals and didn't get a much socialization with people. She will need a loving and understanding adopter to help her transition to a normal home life. She has made great progress the past few weeks in her foster home. Every day she's gaining confidence and trust with the aid of routine, patience, praise, and treats. When she wants pets she will jump up on the couch or bed and show her tummy. She is low energy but loves to go out in the yard to sniff, sunbathe, or just roll around in the grass! Occasionally she will pick up a squeaky toy but otherwise she just likes to nap. At night she curls up on the bed with her foster parent and the other dogs.

Janie is very respectful around cats. She currently lives with dogs in her foster home but she prefers low energy, mellow dogs who are predictable and polite. Due to her past she has some resource guarding with food around some dogs and needs to be fed separately. Unless her adopter is experienced and diligent with managing this, a dog-free home might be easier for her to navigate.

She is about 95% there with her house training with only a rare accident. She loves her crate and sleeps in it all day while her foster parent is at work. For the most part she is quiet but she occasionally barks when outside or if she's excited for mealtime.

Due to her anxiety, Janie gets scared when being grabbed or picked up and she will stay clear when you walk toward her. For that reason a calm home with a fenced-in yard for potty time and without young kids is preferred. Once she is comfortable with you she is very accepting of affection and a good snuggler as long as it's on her own terms. She is very responsive to treats and positive reinforcement and she has been started on an anti-anxiety medication for now to help her succeed.

While Janie may need some recovery after the stressful beginning to her life, she is still worthy of a loving home (much like those research beagles that many have shown interest in). Every time she reaches a milestone your patience will be rewarded.
