Jake's Story

He is now playing with toys. He enjoys squeaky ones. So far none have been destroyed while he is playing with them. Jake met our 8 year old daughter and he's as polite to her as he has been to the rest of the people he has met. He has also been fully introduced to the resident female boxer and they are now best friends also. It took about 3 days, but this was due to the female's 'tude and had nothing to do with Jake's manners. They play so hard now that they both end up in a pile on the floor panting and fall asleep where they landed. Jake is working on his crate training. He is not a big fan of getting in it, and needs to be lured in with cookies (he likes soft ones, not the crunchy kind) or Kong's filled with peanut butter and frozen (so it lasts longer). He whines while first in the crate, but settles when ignored. He has some separation anxiety and we feel he would be better suited with someone that is home more often than not due to his displeasure in the crate and due to him marking corners of walls when he was left out of the crate alone at home. Jake appears to be used to sleeping in the bed with his people and invites himself up. He will get off with some coaxing and is redirected to his dog bed if it's not acceptable for him to be taking up the whole people bed. He is a BIG boy. Jake had a trip to the vet yesterday and was polite to everyone he met and took both his vaccines and getting his blood drawn for heartworm test in stride without even flinching. He has a lump in his right armpit that the vet looked at and was not concerned about at this time. He also has a bit of a gross right ear that the vet cleaned. It is not an infection at this time and he is getting some preventative wash drops daily to help keep it clean for a bit. When the vet looked in this ear was the only time Jake grumbled, understandably, as his ear was likely very uncomfortable. He liked the part where the vet massaged the cleaner into his ear though. Jake weighs 78.6 lbs. He eats 4 cups of food per day, 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. His day looks like this: wake up at 5:30 to go out and eat. Take a walk after breakfast and do his business. Play hard with foster brother and sister dogs. Crate while his people are at work. Go out when his people get home from work and play with fosters siblings again. Eat dinner around 5. Play more. Go on a before bed walk to handle all his business. Bed around 9, after some more playing with his foster sister until they get told they need to settle down. Jake is taking Heartguard for heartworm preventative and Nexguard for flea/tick preventative. This boy is ready to go!

3/27/22-Jake is a happy, easy going, friendly, BIG snuggler. Is he all boxer? Not sure...but he is 100% good Boi! Jake got here less than 24 hours ago and has settled in like he's lived here his whole life. He is house broken. He likes walks, and please don't say the word unless you intend on taking him for one. He pulled a bit on a collar, but switching to a front clip harness was like getting doggie power steering...he walks next to you and on a loose leash with it. Jake is a little weird around cars. I'm not sure if he is scared of them or wants to chase them, so hold on when you're walking him and make sure you're aware of what's around. He also wanted to chase a squirrel on a walk as well. He takes treats gently. He is a messy drinker, like a typical boxer. He let's you inspect his ears and paws and touch his belly without issue. In fact, he seems to enjoy belly rubs and ear massages. Jake was introduced to both a male and female resident dog. He became bffs with the male within a few hours and they slept next to each other on dog beds his first night in foster. It's naps and play bows and traditional boxer play boxing matches for these 2 gentlemen. The female is still warming up to the idea of having another doggie brother. More on that to come. Jake isn't too interested in toys yet, but that may change as he settles in. He's been much more interested playing with his foster brother. Jake has no idea how big he is and will jump up to put his paws on your chest when you aren't paying him enough attention. He is easily redirected with an "off". Jake also comes fully loaded with a tail. It totally gives away his poker face though and acts as his happy meter. He lets you know when he needs to be pet, which is often, by putting his head under your unsuspecting hand. He likes to snuggle with people and is particularly fond of my husband. He hasn't met our 8 year old daughter yet, as she's been away on a trip, but he will on Wed and he'll also be headed to the vet that day as well. Another update to come after Wednesday.

3/26/22-Jake came into rescue today thanks to his transport volunteers. He is an owner surrender that just had a 3rd child & said they had no time for him anymore. They got him off Craigslist as a puppy & were told he is a purebred boxer. He looks like a typical backyard breeder type boxer (they don’t pay to dock tails when born & little longer nose), but he could have tiny bit of something mixed in. Jake lived 3 kids baby to 14 years old & was great with all & was good with dogs. He also lived with cats/kittens & even acted like a momma cat & gently carried one of the tiny kittens to his bed just to take a nap with him! He did great on his ride to his foster home & everyone fell in love with him along the way. Updates soon from his foster home.
