Jackson's Story

1 to 1.5 year old Jackson was found as a stray and landed himself in a shelter. He was very stressed in that setting and difficult to manage so they transferred him to Mattie's Place, where he settled in quickly to his foster home.

I'm unsure of his breed mix; Miniature Pinscher, Manchester Terrier, German Pinscher etc. I really don't know. Whatever his breed is, he is gorgeous and sweet and everything wonderful in a dog.

Jackson weighs in at 8 KG/18 pounds and has very long legs, standing knee height to an average person.

He is higher energy and I just bet, given the opportunity, this boy could be an agility champion. He's smart enough and fast enough and he has an athletic build to carry him up and over and do it fast!

Jackson will need an adopter that understands the terrier breeds and willing to work with Jackson and a professional trainer to build his confidence and help him learn some essential coping mechanisms he's missed out on in his early puppy months. Jackson is still a very young dog, estimating he's only 1 - 1 1/2 years old, so he is very much a sponge at the moment and will benefit greatly from training.

He'll also need an adopter that will offer him an outlet for his energy, which will also help build his confidence and lessen his anxiety. An adventurous and active adopter willing to get out each day with Jackson is a must and the bonus of a large fenced in backyard where he can also run and play with her person would be amazing!

Because Jackson is not burning down his full energy requirements in foster care, he can become overstimulated with his play style and regulating his emotions can be difficult, so he can be more puppy mouthy than he should be.

Jackson is also still working on potty training but he is using pee pads successfully when not making it outside. He's only been in rescue a few weeks and his neuter just happened on arrival, so he will absolutely move past this with consistency to training.

Jackson has a deep loyalty to his people and such an incredible love for humans, that he is exhibiting some separation anxiety when his people leave the home, he will need someone home most often and a routine that helps him to be distracted when one of his humans leaves the home so it isn't such an overwhelming moment for him; a frozen KONG, a long walk, a puzzle toy etc.

Again, Jackson is a young dog. With training and dedication, he can overcome the weak points in his personality.

Jackson is a very easy boy to love. He loves, love and loves humans so much. He needs just a quick moment with proper introductions and then everyone is an immediate new bestie! Same with dogs. Proper introductions in a controlled setting and he goes from shy to bestie and let's play! I wouldn't place him in a home with young kids, given his energy and required training. Could he be around visiting kids with supervision? Absolutely.

Unsure about cats. I likely wouldn't trust him to not chase a cat, or squirrel or rabbit or anything fast moving.

Jackson will be an amazing companion to an adopter that understands a terrier breed and can match the lifestyle they need to be the greatest best friend to you!

FROM THE FOSTER:

Jackson is a very sweet, affectionate, and endlessly entertaining beautiful boy. He has only 2 modes - Cuddly.....and Crazy!

Cuddly mode: Jackson loves to snuggle up next to us on the couch, and falling asleep in our bed seems to be a highlight of every day. He seems to crave physical touch whenever we are close, which is so endearing, but you need to be mindful of those flailing arms šŸ™‚. This desire for constant contact seems to be somewhat moderating as he becomes more comfortable in our home.

Crazy Beast mode: Jackson is a rambunctious ball of unbridled puppy energy! Our living room has officially become his personal parkour course.....jumping seems to be his specialty, but he is also lightning fast. When he gets over excited, his play can become a little overbearing and he will sometimes jump up and nip at baggy clothing. He goes from calmly napping in his bed to wildly racing around in an instant.

He is learning some basic commands - i.e. down, wait, stop, which is encouraging. As for potty training.....this is not currently his towering strength. For the most part he is doing his business outside, and using a pee pad, but there are still daily accidents inside. We typically take him out about 5-6x per day (7am first, 10:30pm last).

One pleasant surprise is that he barks much less than expected. That said, when he gets triggered by a sound that feels like a threat, he has a growl that sounds like a ferocious Doberman. An intruder would never know he is only 18 pounds and has a heart of gold šŸ™‚.

Jackson responds well to positive re-enforcement (highly treat motivated) and has the exact opposite reaction to anything resembling aggression i.e. a simple raised hand can have him cowering in terror.

He also exhibits fairly dramatic separation anxiety when one of us leaves the house, at times crying for up to an hour before he settles down.

It did not take us long to fall in love with his kind spirit, affectionate personality, and overall wonderful puppy exuberance for pretty much anything.

Jackson seems to respond well to anyone who shows him love.

------------------------------------

$875 ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leash|collar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.

----------------------------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in it's current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.
