Jackson's Story
(please email for a picture, petfinder is broken and I can't load a picture)

Jackson is probably a very confused little man right now. After spending his entire life with a loving owner in Oregon, she became ill and had to move to Arizona with her family. Unfortunately, they were unable to care for Jackson and his mom at the same time, so he was on his way to the Kingman Animal Shelter when he was intercepted and brought to the Australian Shepherd Rescue in Las Vegas. He is currently with a foster mom who says he is amazing. Jackson is THE original Velcro Aussie. He will follow you everywhere you go. He is very loving and devoted and does nothing but watch you’re every move with his beautiful blue eyes, just to make sure you’re OK. He wants nothing more than to lay next to you and cuddle.

Jackson is house trained with perfect manners and has not had to be crated once. He loves to lay next to you on the couch and especially to snuggle in bed at night, but if you don’t want him on the furniture, just tell him so and he will quickly get down. He knows Sit, Down, Stay and Come. Being an older gentleman, he does not need the amount of exercise that a younger Aussie does, but he still loves his walks. He could stand to lose a few pounds, but with daily walks and the proper diet, he will soon be back to a healthy weight. He likes to pull a little, but is learning to Heal with an Easy Walk Harness, which will come along with him. He also loves car rides and is the perfect passenger. Being protective and a very laid back guy, Jackson does not like things that move fast or make a lot of noise and will do best as an only dog in a home without young children. He absolutely loves all adults and will take scratches and belly rubs from anyone who will give them. Jackson needs someone who needs him just as much so that he can enjoy his Golden Years with the perfect partner. Mostly he just needs to know that all these confusing changes going on this late in his life his will soon be over and he can shower all the love he so badly wants to give on the one who gives him his Forever Home.

Jackson does not seem to like other dogs at all, but with a quick correction, will stop barking immediately. When I have run into other people walking their dogs and stopped to talk, he will turn his back to the other dog so that he does not get upset. He’d rather ignore the situation than engage.

Jackson will be 10 yrs old in June. His teeth are clean, but they are worn down. He has recently been shaved and had his nails clipped, so I am guessing they had his teeth cleaned at that time too. He let me brush his teeth and even scrape the little bit of tarter off with my dental tool. He has let me handle every part of his body (mouth, feet, legs, ears, belly, etc... ) with no issue at all. He has no problem being brushed and will probably have a gorgeous coat if it is properly cared for and has grown back out.

He is about 8 – 10 lbs. overweight. He will not eat dry food, but I have been mixing ½ cup dry with ½ cup wet, added water to make a gravy and he eats it that way. I’ve been feeding him twice a day (Under the Sun Lamb and Rice), which I will send a large baggie along with him.

He pants very heavily like dogs do when they start to get older, which is another reason I’m guessing his age a little higher. He sleeps most of the time while in the house, but gets up to follow you whenever you move. He gets very excited when he sees the leash and absolutely loves walks. I’ve been using an Easy Walk Harness with him because he does like to pull and with just a collar, he was making that choking/heavy tracheal sound which concerned me. He also heels very well with the Easy Walk.

He is great in the car and lays right next to me in the passenger seat with a doggie seatbelt. When Beth dropped him off to me, she said he rode in her back seat and did the exact same, got settled in and fell asleep. He has had trouble jumping into my truck and on my bed, but I have steps for the truck and a ramp by my bed that my 13-year-old Aussie used before he passed. If Jackson tries to jump onto something too high on his own, he falls. He also has trouble getting up if he’s been laying down too long. I’m sure this is due to both his age (almost certainly arthritis) and his weight.

He is amazingly sweet. He loves being pet and just wants to be right next to you all the time. I am hoping an older person or couple will adopt him, or possibly someone who takes in geriatric dogs for their last few years would be his Angel. He just wants to go for a daily walk or two and then love someone to death at home.

He will be available thru A Home 4 Spot at the Petco located at 1631 West Craig Rd, from 10-4 on Saturday and Sunday.

Herding breeds are commonly available at our local shelters. Some shelters are not 'rescue friendly' and we are unable to save these dogs from euthanasia.

BY ADOPTING ME, WE CAN SAVE ANOTHER LIFE!

My adoption includes spay/neuter, rabies, micro-chip, current vaccinations and 1 free vet

Once a foster home is found, we can learn specifics on the dog, can you help foster?

PLEASE NOTE: Dogs are posted by volunteers, not employees. We try to update as adopted.

Help needed, help us with adoptions at PetSmart on the weekends, or can foster a dog- please contact Naomi at dogrescuelv@hotmail.com.
