Jackie

Jackie has been here less than 24 hours and she's settling in beautifully. She hugged her shelter transport guy goodbye, met foster mom sweetly, ran and played ball (she LOVES the big hard Jolly Ball), and met dogs politely through the fence. She ate a good dinner, watched tv cuddled on the couch with foster mom and dad, and slept in a warm soft bed in the house all night like a good girl for the first time in at least ten months, and possibly ever. She went out to potty first thing in the morning, then a quick cuddle and breakfast.<br/><br/>Jackie entered a Bay Area shelter last August. Like so many other large breeds and mixes she had no interest and sat day after day, week after week, month after month. Staff and volunteers did heir best to provide attention, exercise and enrichment, but because of kennel stress and lack of adoption interest, she was running out of time.<br/><br/>She was sent to Miranda's Rescue in April. A fee of $500 was paid by donors for her to go there. If you have been following the news, you know the tragedy of Miranda's. Jackie was very nearly another victim.<br/><br/>At the end of April, only days after Jackie arrived, nine dogs at the rescue were shot and killed and buried in a mass grave on the property. Many more are being dug up as we speak during an active investigation for animal cruelty, fraud and other charges. Hundreds and probably thousands of dogs that went to Miranda's are unaccounted for and were likely killed. Private citizens and shelters paid from $500-2,000 per dog to the "no kill" sanctuary with a promise that the dogs would be adopted or live out their lives there. Had two very brave women not exposed the truth, Jackie would no doubt have been one of those dogs shot and buried. When the shelter heard what happened they picked Jackie back up and she returned to the shelter, but still had no interest and they reached out to Dogwood.<br/><br/>Jackie is a Pitty type mix of about 55 pounds and 2 years old.
