JACK (Vision Impairment)

Jack is a friendly and outgoing boy approximately 2-3 years old and is good with other dogs. He was found as a stray who'd been injured while wandering. A local nonprofit group dedicated to providing for sick and injured shelter animals (Pound Pals Downriver), provided needed the veterinary care he needed to treat the wound and control the infection. <br/><br/>Volunteer dog trainers for the shelter referred to him as a perfect dog who is very eager to please. Knows commands and very intelligent. We knew Jack would not be hard to place... <br/><br/>Until we realized he didn't have vision in one eye. The signs were there, but Jack is such an intelligent dog he hid them. Testing curb height by passing the front of his paw up the side until he felt the surface. Feeling with his whiskers, relying on his sense of scent... <br/><br/>The next blow came when his veterinarian diagnosed him with Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). Jack has a high likelihood of losing his vision completely. The only positive is he won't experience any pain, but his vision loss will progress as he lives in a shelter. <br/><br/>The best scenario is that Jack will find a home able to help him adjust as his vision fades. He gets along with the other dogs he's met at the shelter, but would not be responsibly placed in a home with cats.
