Hushpuppy Hank's Story

170+ days.

For over 170 days and counting, Hank has spent his days watching families walk past his kennel, hoping every set of footsteps might finally stop for him, and trying so hard to understand why no one has chosen him yet.

Hushpuppy Hank is a 1 year old boy who came to us from a large seizure case on Thanksgiving Day alongside nearly 30 other dogs. While many people spent that day surrounded by comfort, food, family, and celebration, Hank’s world was completely changed. He was removed from an unsanitary living situation and placed into an unfamiliar environment filled with noise, strangers, and uncertainty. Since that day, we’ve kept promising him it was for the better. We keep assuring him brighter days are ahead.

But Hank doesn’t fully understand that yet.

When new people come to meet him, Hank often goes into full “stranger danger” mode. He gets nervous, overwhelmed, and sometimes acts like he’d rather retreat back to his kennel. And honestly, that makes finding him a home harder. Most people naturally gravitate toward the happy-go-lucky dogs bouncing to the front of the kennel begging for attention. Hank isn’t that dog.

Not because he doesn’t want love or because he isn’t good. He’s just scared. There’s a lot happening around him all the time, and more than anything, Hank simply wants to feel safe.

He carries anxiety, uncertainty, and the emotional scars shelter life can leave behind. He needs patience, understanding, and someone willing to move at his pace instead of expecting instant trust. But once Hank starts to feel comfortable, you realize how badly he wants connection. During his time in foster care, he absolutely loved having a soft place to rest, people he could trust, and the chance to finally relax. Watching him return to the shelter after that has honestly been heartbreaking.

Hank has now spent over 6 months with us waiting for someone to see past the fear and recognize the sweet dog underneath it all.

Hank deserves slow mornings, cozy beds, and a home where he never has to wonder if he’s safe again. He deserves someone who celebrates the little victories with him and understands that healing doesn’t always happen overnight.

Sometimes the most rewarding dogs are the ones who need a little extra time to believe they’re finally loved. And Hank is worth that time.
