Hugo's Story

Meet Hugo

Hugo is our longest K9 resident, and his story is one of incredible growth, resilience, and hope.

Hugo is estimated to be 2 years old and weighs 55 lbs. He came to us as a stray, terrified of just about everything. Over time, he has blossomed into a playful, loving companion who has learned that the world isnt such a scary place after all. He has come so far, and we couldnt be more proud of him.

A couple of months ago, Hugo was adopted and broke loose from his new mom. He was on the run for two long weeks before he was finally caught on the day of the blizzard. After everything he went through, Hugo recovered and has continued to thrive. That experience showed just how resilient this boy truly is.

Hugo absolutely thrives with a K9 companion. He loves every dog he meets and forms deep bonds with them. His canine friends give him confidence, companionship, and someone to look to when he needs reassurance. His longtime friend was recently adopted, and Hugo has been doing his best to find new friends to fill that empty spot.

Hugo can be shy when meeting new people and needs time to warm up. Proper introductions and patience are important. Crowds and too much activity can overwhelm him, so a calmer environment would be best. He needs a family willing to continue helping him socialize, build confidence, and understand that he is safe and loved.

A secure 6-foot fence is required for Hugo. His future family will need to understand his history and make sure he is always safely contained.

Hugo is losing hope in the shelter. He has spent so much of his life waiting for someone to see the wonderful dog hiding behind that initial shyness.

He doesn't need a perfect family. He needs a patient family. A family willing to give him time. A family willing to love him through the nervous moments and celebrate the silly, playful ones.

Most of all, Hugo needs a family — and a dog friend — to show him what it truly means to be loved.

And theres an extra special opportunity for one of our deserving dogs!

The Cheboygan County 4H K9 Club has partnered with Wild Hearts Yoga Studio for Dog Yoga, and they are generously sponsoring the adoption fee for Hugo, Rexx OR Sasuke!

That means one of these deserving boys could find their forever family with their adoption fee already taken care of, thanks to this wonderful community partnership. What an amazing gift to help one of our shelter dogs get one step closer to home!

Hugo has so much love to give. He just needs someone willing to give him the chance.

Could you be Hugos forever family?

We do not hold available/adoptable animals as we are a first come first serve facility. However, we do place animals in homes that are best fitting for that animal. If you rent, please supply your landlord's information as we cannot adopt until we speak to them directly or have something in writing approving the animal(s) allowed. If you are interested in us matching you with a forever pet, please fill out an adoption questionnaire below for us to know a little bit more about you! Please keep in mind we do require vet checks and meet and greets with other dogs in the home. It normally takes 30 + minutes for the adoption process.
