THE ADOPTION APPLICATION IS LOCATED ON OUR WEBSITE: http://www.idogrescue.com/adoption_application

Meet Huey-OH, a 3 year-old male Mini Labradoodle who is in an IDOG foster home in Chardon, Ohio. If you choose not to answer all the questions in the application, your application will not be considered. We will review your application & email you if you made our short list of applicants for him. Please respond within 24 hours if you receive an email from us about making our short list.

*You can check the status of his adoption at https://www.idogrescue.com/adopt or any of our social media pages. We will change his status to adopted when he is adopted.

*We base our adoption decisions on what is in the best interest of our dogs. Please note our adoption policies are in place for the safety & welfare of our dogs. We are all volunteers & have jobs, families, pets of our own to care for. We do the best that we can to get back to you in a timely manner. We believe in taking time to go through our thorough process to try to match the dog with the best fit for that dog.

*You must be approved to adopt him before we will schedule a meet & greet. We do not transport our dogs.

*AGE: 3 years old (born December 2022)

*WEIGHT: 38 lbs. Huey is a bit of a gourmet connoisseur and much prefers simple, high-quality treats such as jerky or freeze-dried over more processed options. While he is currently on a kibble diet, he can be quite picky and will sometimes turn his nose up at it. We have found that he eats best when he has had plenty of exercise/stimulation throughout the day. Huey was underweight when he first came into rescue. His previous owner mentioned that he spent a significant amount of time in a crate, which they felt contributed to his lack of appetite at the time. Ensuring he stays active/engaged seems to be the key to keeping him interested in his meals.

*FENCE REQUIREMENT: A physical fence & yard are required as we feel this would help set him up for success. No electronic/invisible fences, or e-collars will be allowed.

*COAT TYPE: gorgeous, soft, curly, lower-shedding coat. You should be prepared to brush him often (he loves being brushed) & have him groomed regularly (every 6-8 weeks) with an estimated cost of $120/groom.

*ENERGY LEVEL: Huey loves playing chase with the other dogs in his foster home and has matched his play to his foster dogs (currently with dogs that are all bigger than him). He loves a good game of chase or tug but is also happy to curl up on the couch or in his foster mom's office. Remember he needs adequate mental and physical energy releases to keep his appetite and to keep him from finding his own jobs (sniffing counters, dragging shoes around). He is athletic as well. We are also continuing to work on his impulse control; while he still jumps when he is excited to meet you, he is showing steady improvement.

*DOGS: He loves other dogs and is willing to tumble and chase with them. We do not suggest submissive, older or smaller dogs.

*CATS: He lived with 3 cats. At first he would chase them but he has mostly lost interest in the chase. One of the cats slept with him in his crate.

*KIDS: Ages 8+ who are comfortable around a dog that jumps, sometimes gets mouthy and likes to kiss faces. He is still learning and gets excited. He spent time with dog-savvy 5 and 6 year old, and they walked him inside on a leash and got him to listen to some commands. They played chase and played with toys. He sometimes jumped, was overly excited and wanted to kiss faces. He may grab on to legs and hang on to you; we are working on this behavior and hopefully he will improve with this. He will feed off the energy which is why we are suggesting ages 8 and up.

*CAR: LOVES car rides! He rides well in a crate in the car.

*CRATE: Huey is crate trained but sometimes plays a game of "I know you are going to put me in there." He cries at night in the crate but knows the "quiet" command and is improving. He does want to be with you. He is used to sleeping outside of the crate so this has been new for him. He knows to wait to be released with an okay. If he has enough stimulation through the day he does very well. If you are lacking on keeping him engaged such as playing and letting him explore he will whine.

*HOUSE TRAINED: Yes! He has had no accidents in foster care. He goes near the door when he wants to be let out to potty.

*LEASH: Huey is doing well with leash training and will respond to verbal cues. He pulls, so it's a work in progress and is very manageable. We are working on leash pressure using a verbal uh-uh and freeze-dried dog food as a reward for holding position. He is confident & curious when out for a walk & wants to meet everyone he sees.

*AT THE VET: Huey was fully vetted when he arrived so there were no vet visits while in foster care. He was taken to the vet's office on several occasions to get his microchip scanned & to get his weight.

*AT THE GROOMER: Huey did great for a bath, blow dry, trim, and brushing. Consistent grooming will be key due to his coat to keep it from matting. His previous owner stated he was calm at the groomer.

Huey came to IDOG as an owner surrender. His owner loved him dearly but worked 12-hour days & knew Huey would be happier in a home where he wasn’t crated all day.

He is a young, energetic dog ready for a calm but active home where he can enjoy both adventures and cuddling on the couch. Huey loves being around people and has a solid foundation in obedience (sit, stay, come, place, threshold boundaries, and waiting to be let out of the crate). He will do great in his new home if they continue to work on these things as he is smart and it's all in there. He responds well to verbal corrections.

Huey would thrive in a calm/active household with a fenced-in yard and another playful dog for companionship. He may be too much for small, older or submissive dogs. While he is very social, he is still learning boundaries and sometimes plays too roughly or becomes too vocal.

Because he tends to mouth hands (still improving) or jump when excited, a home with older children would be most suitable. He matches the energy of his environment so an ideal setting would be a calm household that provides plenty of exercise and structure.

We ask that you give any rescue dogs time to acclimate – 3/3/3 rule – 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months. For 3 days the dog may wonder who you are, what the routine is, who the other dogs are. After about 3 weeks, the dog has typically acclimated to your schedule & knows its role in the house and the routine of the house. After about 3 months, the dog has revealed their temperament & personality & settled in.

Adjectives that describe Chewie:
*Confident
*Smart
*Curious explorer
*Very friendly
*Energetic
*Athletic
*Playful
*Snuggly
*Affectionate

Activities that Huey enjoys:
-Tug - with people & with other dogs
-Loves to play “keep away” with foster dogs
-Walking - loves to explore, he is adventurous & confident on walks
-Toys - Benebones and antlers seem to be his favorite. He will destroy and try to eat some soft toys; he will play with others for days. Supervision is needed with soft toys.
-Cuddling - If you're watching TV he is ready to cuddle. If you’re working at a desk he loves to lie at your feet or on a bed in his foster's office.
-Meeting new people - Huey is very outgoing & happy to meet new people, as well as new dogs. He befriended the mail carrier and even tried to leave with her. Her does jump to meet them and needs continued work.

A few ‘needs work’ items for Huey:
--Continued work on manners to be the best dog ever! He does well with a firm consistent structure to prevent unwanted behaviors. The basics are there but he will benefit from guidance as he learns his new routine. If you give him freedom too soon he will revert to these behaviors.
--Huey also likes to jump on people. He will need continued training to help him be a well-mannered boy.

Huey is neutered, house trained, microchipped, current on core vaccines, dewormer, & heartworm/flea tick preventives. His heartworm & fecal tests were negative.

ADOPTION FEE: $550 adoption fee

ADOPTION FEE EXPLANATION:
Puppies and highly adoptable dogs have a higher adoption fee to help IDOG cover the vetting and expenses of the other dogs in IDOG whose adoption fees do not cover their expenses. Our expenses are very high these days due to increased vetting expenses, board and train costs, medical/health issues and surgery that is needed for some of our dogs. IDOG relies heavily on donations to bridge the gap between our adoption fees and our expenses. Unfortunately, donations are down across the board for all rescues.

TO APPLY FOR Huey-Ohio, PLEASE COMPLETE THE APPLICATION ON OUR WEBSITE: http://www.idogrescue.com/adoption_application
