Hueso's Story

Hueso is a three-year-old female galga who joined American Greyhound after spending time at SOS Galgos in Barcelona, Spain. She is a beautiful white and cream galga, tall and elegant. Volunteers at the shelter in Spain described her as a “precious girl”. She is good with both other dogs and with cats. (And chickens, according to her foster family!)

Hueso is fully house trained and signals if she needs to go out. She understands “potty” and “outside”. She sleeps through the night and prefers to sleep on the bed with humans, although will nap in dog beds and on the couch during the day. She’s usually not destructive, though she does like to chew on things like cardboard, or food and drink containers at her level. She hasn’t counter-surfed and largely leaves things alone if they are out of her reach. That said, Hueso is a collector! She likes to take her foster families socks or gardening gloves to her bed for safekeeping.

Since arriving in the US, Hueso’s confidence has grown. While she has always had good leash manners, she is more eager to explore now and pulls a little at times. She adores her galgo foster brother and always follows his lead. If he’s sniffing something, she immediately goes to see what he’s into. He’s her safety net, and she definitely prefers when he (or another dog) is around. She is rarely by herself completely, but does well when left alone or with another dog. She tends to whine a bit and pace, but eventually she lays down.

Hueso does startle easily, and can get overwhelmed by other dogs and people in the small dog park she visits. She loves to run and play in the park with her foster brother in the morning, when it is quiet and no one else is there yet. She particularly afraid of men, and in the few months since arriving, she has not made a ton of progress with learning to trust Foster Dad. Instead, she tends to stick to her galgo sibling and Foster Mom as much as possible.

This sweet girl is still adjusting to living in a home rather than on the streets, so she is cautious and vigilant even when at home. She will sometimes take treats, but only if they are small enough that she can flee with them easily. She is always on alert, and will pause and look around if she hears a noise.

One of Hueso’s favorite things to do at the park is to sidle up to Foster Mom for rear-end scritches and pets. Even after a few months in a home, she sometimes flinches at sudden movements like a person reaching out to pet her. When indoors, she’s more leery and doesn’t seek out affection.

While she is still shy and scared, Hueso can also be a very silly girl sometimes. She’s very dramatic when she sets her head down or when she’s yawning, and often closes her mouth like she’s biting down on something. When at the dog park, she’s playful, hopping and trotting around the park. She would LOVE another dog to run with in the park! (Foster brother is not always interested since he is a bit older.) While she’s not interested in most dog toys, she does occasionally collect them on the bed. It’s definitely taken her months to come out of her shell, but over time, she’s beginning to let her true self shine!

We primarily adopt across the Midwest, including Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Missouri, and surrounding states. American Greyhound's Adoption Policy
There are so many hounds in need of loving homes, and we are excited that you are considering adopting one of these great dogs! We look forward to helping you find the best dog for your family. To get started, please review the adoption resources on our website and then visit our adoption application page to submit your information. * * * * * Adoption Information We primarily adopt across the Midwest, including Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and Missouri. In special cases, transportation can be arranged outside of our usual area. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, dental (if needed), vaccinations, and routine exam/testing. All dogs also come with a martingale collar, safety harness, and leash. Because every dog is living in a foster home, we gradually learn more about them the longer they are with us. They have new experiences, like meeting big or small dogs, living with additional pets, or spending time with children. They also begin to acclimate to living in a home, including learning house manners and developing a routine. We try to update profiles as we learn new information, but if you have questions about a specific dog, please ask! * * * * * Application Process Your application will be delivered to our volunteer Adoption Coordinators, who will typically contact you within a few days. Your adoption coordinator will set up a time to speak with you about your interest in adopting a sighthound and discuss which dogs may be a good match. We'll also contact your references. When determining if a dog would be a good fit, we help you take into consideration factors like other pets, children in the home, household activity level, and more. Our goal is to find a match that is ideal not just for you and your family, but for the dog as well. We will help coordinate the pick-up/drop-off of your new family member with you and the hound’s foster family or one of our transport volunteers. Your adoption coordinator will also let you know when the adoption fee should be paid. Adoption fees vary by hound and can be found on each dog’s individual profile. * * * * * “Cat-Tolerable” Hounds Due to the importance of finding a safe match for homes with feline residents, we ask for your understanding in giving priority to those with cats living in the home when “cat-tolerant” hounds are available. Potential adopters who do not have cats should choose from the “not cat-tolerant” hounds whenever possible, so that households with cats are able to adopt hounds, too. (For more information on cat introductions and sighthounds’ compatibility with cats, please visit our website.) Please be aware that even if a dog is "cat-safe", they may not get along with a specific cat, so we advise slow and careful introductions for every dog. * * * * * Return Policy If a particular hound is not working out in your home for any reason, such as conflicts with other pets, children, etc., American Greyhound will always take the dog back and will find another home that is a better match. Remember that every hound has been welcomed into the hearts and home of his or her foster family once already, and our volunteers will gladly welcome them again. Please note, it is required that any dog adopted from American Greyhound be returned to our organization if they cannot stay in their adoptive home, regardless of the reason for return. * * * * * We look forward to helping you find your new best friend!
