Howie's Story
Shih Tzu puppy fully vetted and ready for adoption.

Backstory for Howie

Animal Saints Rescue Society was asked to help with a hoarding situation where several litters of puppies were born in quick succession. Dozens of Shih Tzu were living in a very small apartment when hobby breeding quickly became untenable. It is an honor to help get all of the adults neutered so the breeding stops, as well as ensure that the babies are placed with lifetime families.

Get to Know Howie

Age: 4 months
Breed: Shih Tzu birthdate: 7.28.2025

Weight: approximately 2.5 pounds. A neuter deposit of $300 will be required when the adoption is made official. This deposit will be refunded when we receive the spay certificate from the adopter. The adopter may choose the doctor of their choice and pay for the surgery themselves. Alternatively, a spay voucher for Otterkill Animal Hospital in Maybrook, New York can be provided if you are willing to take him to this clinic for his surgery.

Requested adoption donation fee is only $900. This is to partly cover his veterinary bills and care expenses that our 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue incurred to help him.

Breed and Hair Notes

Howie has hair and not fur. He is a brown and white Shih Tzu with the most darling big eyes and symmetrical brown markings on his face. He is so, SO darling and playful!

PLEASE NOTE: Howie's hair will grow as it is not fur. He will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care.

Howie has been terrific for his baths, haircuts, and nail trims.

Personality

Howie is a bit of a court jester. He can always bring a smile, just by looking at him. He is so eager to connect and please. Howie is playful and sweet with his littermates, and he is equally so with humans. We have a lot of volunteers who have come to help socialize the puppies. Howie is a hugger and such a love.

Ideal Home

It is ideal for Howie to be in a home with other small dogs and/or very dog friendly cats around. He would not do well in a home as the only dog, especially if his people are gone all day at work. Families with children are case-by-case.

Bix will especially thrive in a home that can give him companionship day and night. Bix would be okay for a few hours on his own with his siblings if you provided him with puzzles and things to do while you’re away.

Plan on sharing your sofa and bedroom with Howie. He will want to be by your side, no matter where you are and what you are doing.

If you have a very secure fenced-in backyard for running and playing, this is ideal for Howie. He is going to be a petite Saint, even full grown. He will need exercise but not miles and miles of daily hiking like a working dog. Howie is a companion animal in the truest sense of the word. His goal is to love and be loved.

Love and Commitment

At Animal Saints Rescue Society, our goal is to keep dogs out of overcapacity animal control facilities and out of a re-homing cycle. We place the dogs we save into lifetime families. With this in mind, we seek families who understand that an adoption is a lifetime commitment. The families who adopt from us believe that love is not a feeling, it is a decision. Some humans still believe it’s okay to try out a dog for a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years — then discard when they get bored or don’t want to deal with emotional or physical ailments. We are looking for the empathetic, kind, and patient humans in this world who view these Animal Saints as family, and they will do whatever it takes to give them what they need.

Will that family be you? We look forward to finding out and receiving your application!
