Honey N 26034's Story

Honey will remain in the Recovery Room until cleared for adoption.

Meet Honey, a precious 4-year-old Cocker Spaniel that came to us unable to use hind legs. She became suddenly paralyzed about 2 months before she came into rescue and has been unable to use her back legs since then. Honey has a history of seizures, but they are controlled with medication, she has not had a seizure in one year.

We had a neurology consultation for Honey and the examination confirmed that she is paralyzed and has no feeling within her hind limbs or tail. She most likely has an intervertebral disc herniation ("slipped disc") that has damaged her spinal cord. We have learned that because she has lost all pain sensations in her hind limbs and this occurred some time ago, unfortunately the chances of her walking again are extremely low. While we will not be able to restore her ability to walk, we can focus on giving her a great quality of life. We have been referred to a certified veterinary physical rehabilitation specialist who will be able to help Honey with her overall strength and to get her properly fitted for a wheel-cart, a doggie wheelchair. She can pull herself on carpet or grass to move around for a little while. Front leg strength will be important to maintain when she gets into her doggie wheelchair. Her fosters currently use a little wagon to move her around longer distances. See the photos of her in her cute little pink wagon.

Honey currently has a bladder infection and is on antibiotics. She arrived with a poor appetite, and she did not want to drink much on her own. Her fosters are giving her subcutaneous fluids daily, according to the veterinarian instructions to help her re-hydrate. We had her thyroid tested and discovered that her thyroid levels have bottomed out, she has just started on thyroid therapy. Getting her thyroid levels adjusted and the bladder infection cleared up will help her to soon feel better. She is beginning to eat better already. This precious young dog is loving, alert, and very aware of what is going on around her. She is adjusting well to her foster home and the other dogs and cats that live there. The other animals make her perk up!

You can click on the link below her bio if you would like to donate toward Honey's care.

Please follow us as we move forward with Honey.
