Honey's Story

**CURRENTLY IN FOSTER CARE-

Honey is a 9-year-old Labrador Retriever mix who is now a healthy 78 pounds and thriving in a foster home. She is housebroken, wonderful with children, does well with other dogs, and has shown very little interest in cats. Sweet, calm and affectionate, Honey loves cuddles, snacks and all the comforts of home.

The Honey we see today is a long way from the dog who first arrived at Orange County Animal Shelter after being seized. Honey weighed just 44 pounds with a body condition score of 1/9. Every rib, vertebra and hip bone was visible. She was weak, covered in fleas, missing nearly all of her coat and had severely overgrown nails. She was also diagnosed with Lyme disease, which has since been treated.

Even on that first day, Honey's intake exam described her as having a "very sweet, calm demeanor." Despite everything her body had been through, that gentle nature never disappeared.

With veterinary care, proper nutrition and the dedication of her foster family, Honey began to heal. Today she has gained more than 30 pounds, her beautiful chocolate coat has grown back, and the frail dog in her intake photos has become a happy, healthy 78-pound girl who thoroughly enjoys soft beds, cuddles, snacks and simply being part of a home again.

Honey is currently on Apoquel for her skin. Like many older dogs, she also has some lumps and bumps, including mammary masses that her future family should be aware of and continue to monitor with their veterinarian.

Honey has already come an incredible distance. At 9 years old, she isn't looking for anything complicated — just a family who appreciates a sweet older Lab, a comfortable place to land, and someone to love for the rest of her years.

Honey has been spayed. We have microchipped, brought her current on vaccinations, HW tested, dewormed, and maintained on monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.

Apply to adopt here:
https://orangecountyva.gov/159/Pet-Adoption-Foster-Care-Information
