Hondo (Doug/Pierce)'s Story

Hondo is an energetic, playful boy who is looking for a single-dog home where he can truly thrive. He has a big personality and loves having an outlet for his energy through play, activity, and engagement. He is happiest when he is working hard, and all the attention is on him!

He has been engaged in training and has shown great improvement. Hondo is very trainable and responds especially well to consistent, positive reinforcement. Because he can be a bit anxious at times; structure and clear expectations help him feel secure and confident. Hondo has a ton of energy and loves to play! Fetch and tug-of-war are two of his favorite games. He would do best with an active owner, someone who enjoys long walks, hiking, running, or even biking (with training). He thrives when he has both physical activity and mental engagement.

He has a strong prey drive and takes his job of guarding the yard very seriously; squirrels and deer alike are on notice! Hondo is a fearful dog. He is terrified of traffic, movement, and sometimes inanimate objects. He needs a quiet place and an experienced handler and no other animals.

Hondo has a thick double coat and absolutely LOVES playing outside in the snow. He enjoys outdoor time and being able to burn off energy. While he's playful and rambunctious, Hondo also has a sweet, snuggly side. He enjoys sitting on laps and being close to his person. That said, he does need his downtime. If he were human, we'd probably call him an introvert. He can get overstimulated and uses his crate as his safe space to decompress and calm down. He does best in a relatively quiet home without a lot of constant commotion.

Because he can become anxious and occasionally unpredictable when overstimulated, we recommend a home without young children. Teenagers (13+) who understand how to respect his space, especially allowing him to rest without poking or pulling on his ears or tail, would likely be fine.

Hondo just needs the right match, an active, dog-savvy home ready to continue his training, provide consistency, and appreciate both his big personality and his heart.

If you are interested in adopting, please visit our website and complete an adoption application at www.elpasocountycanine.org/adopt
