Meet Highway

We have decided it is finally time to introduce you to an extremely special little dog. His story is not one of a happy past, but we fully intend to guarantee his future is nothing but bliss.

Back in January, Fixing the Boro traveled alongside Guardians of Rescue to assist with a hoarding case in Florida. Once there, it was realized the 70 dogs in one home belonged both to the home owner and her husband.. as well as a licensed Georgia/Florida/Virginia based animal rescue. Among those dogs, living in deplorable conditions with untreated wounds/medical ailments, some stacked 2 per wire crate filled with mess.. was Highway.

Highway had been pulled into this “rescue” late last summer due to finding himself in a rural Ga animal shelter. Suffering of a broken leg/pelvis after being hit by a car, donations were raised by this “rescue”, social media attention was gained, and we are positive it was believed he was safe and would receive top notch veterinary care.. what we found in January was the exact opposite of that intent.

Highway sat from July to January, totally forgotten, with a severely broken back leg. During this time, he received zero medical care pertaining to the break- pain management or otherwise. He had begun to physically remove his leg himself, starting with his toes. What a heartbreaking reality that his supposed savior was actually his hell.

Within 2 days of returning home with us, our incredible vet was able to fully amputate the leg, vaccinate our little guy, treat him for his heavy parasitic load, get him current on monthly prevention, and begin allowing him to finally heal- TRULY heal. He is neutered and microchipped. He was safe, loved, clean, spoiled, and we promised to give him all of the care he so desperately deserved prior and never received.

Since Highway’s surgery, he is a new dog. He now runs and hops with glee, loves to play with people and other dogs, and has been shown the pampered side of life he was missing for so long. Our sweet dude got to be a beach bum two weekends ago, and the look on his face says he KNOWS he is finally living the good life. This is the promise we make to all of the animals that enter our rescue family. We wish so badly they could all see this compassion from the very start.

Our sweet, happy, forgiving little saint of a pup is finally ready to find his PERFECT- and we mean perfect- forever family. He has done extremely well with crate, house, and leash training, gets along well with other pups, and has begun to truly love people- strangers included! He is current on all veterinary care, and cleared by his awesome Vet at Gateway Animal Hospital. His mind, body, and heart have overcome the absolute worst, and we know there is a family out there dedicated to showing him for the rest of his life that he is worthy of love, compassion, and appropriate care. As a young pup of only about a year and a half, he certainly has many, many years of love to give back to a deserving family.

If you would like to meet Highway, or are interested in adoption, please let us know! We will be extremely picky for our little prince!

All adoptable pets through FIXING THE BORO are age appropriately vaccinated, spayed/neutered, microchipped, parasite free, current on monthly prevention, and heartworm negative at time of adoption. Adoption fees vary based on pets’ age, NOT breed or size. For animals under 4 months of age, foster to adopt is required to ensure all vetting is completed while still under the care of Fixing the Boro. All expenses are covered by the rescue during this time.

If you are interested in fostering a pet, please send an email to foster@fixingtheboro.com. ALL foster homes are required to undergo a home inspection, and if approved, each foster will have a contract to sign and a code of ethics to follow. The safety and well-being of our animals is incredibly important to us! Fosters must reside in Bulloch County, and provide proof they are able to house pets if they do not own their home/apartment/condo.
