Hero's Story
We can't wait to see this transformation. We truly all believe if we didn't step in to help Hero that this dog would have surely died. Hero is about 5 years old and was found running as a stray. He ended up in a shelter in Indiana who didn't have the funds to vet him and they asked us to take him. We did as he needed help right away. Hero is a Great Pyrenees mixed dog. When he arrived in rescue he weighed 52 pounds (11/22/25) and you could feel his spine and ribs. When rescued, both ears were terribly infected and he has a bad sore on his nose, most likely from rubbing on a wire cage. To top it all off, he is heartworm positive and is undergoing an expensive treatment to remove the worms in his heart. Speaking of worms, in some of his first potties in our care, he had more worms than poo.

Hero gets along with the dogs in his foster home. He is housebroken and will need a physical fenced yard since he was found as a stray. He came in the week before Thanksgiving and will probably be in our care for 4Â months until he can be adopted. This new photo above shows his progress mid-January. We are greatly looking forward to showing you all the "after" photos of Hero.

Then on January 24th he was rushed into the vets as he was having breathing issues, which ended up with bronchial pneumonia. He also saw a cardiologist and had an echocardiogram which showed he had an enlarged heart and an issue with the left ventricle. He had some irregular heart beats during his echocardiogram and wore a heart monitor overnight. He was released to go home January 27th.

We'll have more information on Hero for you soon.

If you are interested in adopting a golden retriever, please read "How to Adopt" at https://gr-rescue.org/wp/
