Herald's Story

Meet Herald (aka Harry or Hare-Bear)

5 years
70lbs
Male neutered

Herald is a survivor with a heart as big as his paws. He came to Illinois from a shelter in Mississippi after being found severely malnourished and suffering from chemical burns. Against all odds, he survived—and now he’s learning what it means to be safe, loved, and cherished. We’re honored to be part of his journey.

Herald is still working on house training and will need a very consistent routine and a patient adopter to help him continue improving. While potty training has been challenging, he has made real progress and continues to get better with time and structure. He is crate trained and sleeps quietly through the night in his crate. He doesn’t love it, but he accepts it calmly.

This handsome boy has a high energy level and will need a lot of daily exercise, though he’s also very happy to snooze on the couch once his needs are met. He currently enjoys multiple walks a day, yard romps, and pack walks with his foster sibling—and he’d happily do even more. Fun fact: he’s so fast that when his foster tried running with him, he casually walked the entire time.

Herald is phenomenal with other dogs. Even when faced with a challenging resident dog, he’s been incredibly tolerant and gentle, never reacting or escalating. He’s not especially playful with dogs, but he coexists beautifully. He is also exceptional with kids—calm, gentle, and trustworthy, though he can occasionally forget just how big he is. Cats, however, are a no.

On leash, Herald shines. He walks beautifully and truly enjoys his time outside. He also loves car rides and is an absolute dream passenger. Indoors, he enjoys cuddling, couch naps, looking out the window, exploring the backyard, and giving what can only be described as proper hugs—placing his head gently on your shoulder.

Herald is still working on a few things, including counter surfing (which has already improved significantly) and potty training. He’s also hesitant about stairs and currently refuses to use indoor staircases, though he does manage outdoor steps just fine. With patience and continued training, we believe this can improve over time.

Despite everything he’s been through, Herald is one of the sweetest, most affectionate, gentle souls you’ll ever meet. He’s loyal, curious, athletic, and deeply snuggly. He prances when he runs like a little horse and will melt into you for cuddles without hesitation.

Herald would do best with experienced dog owners who understand decompression, structure, and patience—and who are ready to meet his exercise needs. In return, they’ll get a once-in-a-lifetime dog with endless love to give.

Truly, Herald is something special.
