Havok's Story
Adopt HAVOK

Basic Information:
Name: Havok, but comes to nickname Blue

Age/Age Range: 11 months (DOB Nov14)

Gender: Male
Size/Weight: ~60lbs, but will fill out more still. Around 22-23 inches tall at the shoulders.

GOOD WITH?
cats: Maybe, with supervision and space for the cat to escape. He can be obsessive and overbearing, so might unintentionally injure them. Not mean just doesn’t know his size.
kids: Not tested during foster. Might be okay with older, dog-savvy kids. Little kid energy would likely be too unpredictable and overstimulating for him as he wants to join in the fun and play.
dogs: Yes, with proper intros. He will bark at strange dogs occasionally, but shows interest in chill dogs. He plays well with his foster sister and has greeted a few dogs out and about when they approach respectfully.

Personality & Temperament:
Temperament: Curious but cautious. He wants to approach new people to sniff but backs away if they try to pet him. He generally shies away from head pats or overhand pets and prefers chest rubs. Any overhand movements seem to make him nervous, as well as any loud noises or sudden movements (coughing, sneezing, etc) he tends to bark at. He’s VERY cuddly with his foster mom, loves to be the little spoon and will try to be big spoon if you turn your back to him so he can wiggle his snoot into the back of your neck. He’s a happy boy in general, his butt wiggles are the absolute cutest when he’s happy to see you. Very playful and curious, he has to see what you’re up to at all times (especially in the kitchen) and will happily take any toy you hand him. He will also try to eat anything even out of the garbage if left unattended. Very food motivated which makes training sessions a bit easier. He’s always down to run, chase, wrestle, or tug. He absolutely LOVES to play tug and he’s a very strong boy. We’re still working on the “all done” command but he’s getting better with time. He’s a sweet soul who’s just a little bit unsure of the world still.
Energy Level: High, puppy energy still but will happily settle down for a nap once he’s burned some energy. He’s also happy to lay in his bed and chew a bullystick, yak chew, or Nylabone so long as he’s gotten some energy out first. He’s a typical boy and loves to run, wrestle, and play hard. He’s a tough little guy and will try to run and jump off of anything with no fear when he gets the zoomies!
Personality Traits: LOVES food. any kind of food. He’s never met a snack he hasn’t liked. Watermelon, apples, carrots, garbage, leaves, literal mouthfuls of dirt, you name it he’ll try it. He gets VERY excited over food and eats from a slow feeder 2 meals a day (no free feeding for this guy) and is incredibly food motivated but still learning to channel that energy and focus while training. Very energetic, curious, and of course a little mischievous at times. With his person he’s very much a velcro dog and needs to be touching you at all times, laying in your lap, cuddling, or just laying against you. Typical little boy and loves to play hard and fast with no fear.
Likes & Dislikes: Likes: food/snacks, playing tug, wrestling with his foster sister, chasing the cat, exploring/sniffing new places, cuddling with his foster mom, shredding toys (and anything else he gets ahold of?), bobbing for ice cubes in his water bowl, going for swims in the lake/river, chasing the ball when you throw it though he hasn’t mastered giving it back yet.
Dislikes: loud noises, fast movements, people trying to pat his head unexpectedly, bikes (tries to chase them), cars (he will run at bright headlights so strong handler needed on walks) strangers walking too closely, people looming over him, barks at people coming in/out of the house (but settles quickly if he knows them), barks at people/dogs on the other side of the fence, not a fan of the rain but will quickly do his business in the backyard then run back inside, also gets cold easily and will need a sweater/jacket in the winter.
Training Progress: Work in progress... He knows “sit” and is slowly getting better with his “stay” “leave it” and “all done” commands. He will follow you anywhere if he knows you have snacks but can get frustrated and overly excited and start jumping up so training sessions are kept super short still. Recall is still shaky, he will come if he’s not preoccupied with something more interesting. If he knows there’s a treat involved he may stop play and come when called. Not crate trained at all yet, he thinks it’s his bathroom due to prolonged crating throughout puppyhood so we’ve blocked access and he’s now reliably going potty outside so we’ll be slowly reintroducing the crate to start training again. I think if given a kong or safe treat when being left alone for a short period in the crate he’ll have no problem. He’s getting better every day with leash walks but he’s a strong little guy and will pull when excited. A harness with a front leash attachment is best so he doesn’t choke himself, but double leash is recommended still as he’s a weaselly boy and can get out of most harnesses. We use a front attach harness plus martingale collar still.
Socialization: Plays nicely with his foster sister but can be a bit pushy and overwhelming, sometimes doesn’t know when play time is over or she’s not interested. He’s iffy with other dogs on walks. Some he wants to sniff and others he’s reactive/barking/growling though it could be just frustration of not being able to greet them. I would say he’s dog-selective, but definitely not aggressive. He may ignore or try to push boundaries when his sister has had enough so a confident dog similar to his size would be best. He chases the cat and can be overwhelming, he doesn’t mean to hurt them but he’s unaware of his size and might step on their tail or their back when excited and trying to play. He can be a bit obsessive and would need supervised interactions only to make sure any kitties aren’t accidentally injured. He hasn’t been around any kids while living in his foster home, but seems curious on walks. He is a clumsy bouncy boy so I would suggest dog-savvy kids 12+ to be safe. He can nip at sleeves or try to grab toys from your hand when playing so little kid energy might be overstimulating.
Potential Challenges: Separation anxiety is a work in progress. He hates being left alone and due to his crate-soiling he hasn’t been left alone for more than a few minutes at a time. He’s smart and can jump VERY high. He got out of the regular lift-up to open style crate door and easily leaps over 3ft baby gates. He can also run and jump over a 6ft fence so he should never be left alone in a backyard when no one is home. He will try to escape if he thinks he’s being left. He understands boundaries like baby gates inside the home and will stay put if he’s only left for a few minutes but he absolutely can jump them if he wants to. He still barks and growls as his male house mates, but will settle and let them pet him (not his head) if they get down to his level and ignore the barking. He will feed off of nervous energy and stay standoffish if he knows people are unsure of him. He can also jump up and nip out of excitement (he can jump to face level) so it’s important to be aware of energy levels around him, especially if there will be kids involved. Example: play fighting or running around him might get him worked up and think he has to join in. He’s very sensitive to “vibes” and any loud noises and needs a more calm environment to be confident and comfortable. Crate training is TBD and leash pulling is a work in progress, but often he just wants to stop and sniff EVERYTHING rather than pulling ahead. He’s very stubborn so he will try to drag you to reach whatever interesting smell has caught his attention. He will also try to eat or roll in anything stinky ?
Other Important Details:
Medical History: Neutered & UTD on core vaccines. He’s also been given Bravecto by his foster mom. He has a sensitive tummy and gets the runs easily so we stick to single ingredient treats and avoid anything with chicken. His skin is also very sensitive and he frequently gets little hives if he’s rolling around in the grass. He’s been getting weekly baths as he’s an itchy boy in general and this seems to help
with his itching/chewing. He likely won’t need them weekly in the colder months but when he’s active outdoors and rolling on the ground etc his skin starts to feel greasy/dirty and baths seem to keep him more comfortable. Unsure if he’s allergic to chicken but since it’s common with the breed we just choose to avoid it as much as possible, though when he has had chicken he doesn’t immediately react or get hives etc, more so just itchier in general so best to avoid.
Ideal Home Environment:
He would likely adapt well in any home that understands his nervousness and respects his boundaries. He loves going on adventures and is great in the car, also loves to sniff and explore new places. He’d be happy to be someone’s adventure buddy but he could also be a good fit for a less active home so long as he gets his regular walks and zoomies in the yard. He doesn’t like being left alone so having someone home often or another doggy sibling would probably be best. He’s nervous and tends to pull with busier traffic around so big city life is probably not ideal, but he’s a brave boy and could probably live anywhere with someone who has the time to build his confidence and respects his boundaries.
