Haven's Story

My name is Haven and I’m looking for my forever home! I’m still a young girl – I'll turn 2 y.o. in March – and I weigh 25 lbs. I am curious, smart, very friendly and sweet. No really – I am! Foster mom says so. I came to my foster home here in Quincy, IL, because my original owners could no longer care for me. Since I am used to living in a house with a family, I settled in pretty well. I love getting attention and affection – pets and belly rubs and treats! I’m a good girl in the house – no accidents and I don’t get into trouble or destroy things when the humans go out. I usually just snooze until they come home again. There are other dogs here and I love to run and play with them in the fenced yard. One of the other dogs has been aggressive to me, so I’m very cautious around her, but I don’t pick fights. My favorite thing to do outside is chase squirrels! Yep, I inherited the Shiba Inu prey drive and since it’s in my genes, I just can’t resist. I pull really hard on the leash when I see one and I’ve bolted right out of the front door if I see a squirrel run by! Because of this, I probably am not a good match for cats or small pets. And my forever family will need to be very careful when opening doors or gates to the outside and also be extra careful during walks so I don’t get loose. There’s not too much that I don’t like, except for nail trims. I put up quite a struggle. I haven’t lived with any small kids, but I’ve met some and think they’re fine. I sometimes bark at the teenagers here, but it doesn’t take long for me to introduce myself and make friends. I’m a healthy girl – spayed and vaccinated. My perfect forever family would have a securely fenced yard and another nice dog for me to run and play with. I’ll need someone who is experienced with preventing escapes, since I’m a door bolter. If you live in the Midwest and want a sweet, smart and loving little girl like me to be part of your family, visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt for more information and to apply to become an approved SIRA adopter. The application process helps SIRA learn more about you and your home so they can tell if we’ll be a good match. Once approved, they’ll introduce you to my foster mom so we can meet.

Shiba Inu Rescue Association's Adoption Policy
So you've seen the beautiful, headstrong breed known as the Shiba Inu. You've researched the breed's characteristics and examined your living situation and decided you are ready to open your home to a Shiba Inu. Here is a brief summary of SIRA's adoption process. For more detailed information please visit our website: www.savingshibas.com/adopt. The best first step if you live in the midwest and are considering adopting from SIRA is to visit our webiste and read through the adoption policies and procedures. Then you can complete our online application to become approved as an adopter. Once you have completed your application, you will receive a confirmation receipt from Google Form. Depending on how many applications we're processing, it may take several days before you hear back. If you have questions about the status of your application, please email adoptsirashibas@gmail.com. The application forms help us learn more about you and your home environment so we can identify any potential challenges and match you with available dogs who will thrive in your home. Once your application is reviewed, our Applicant Approval Coordinator will get in touch with you about scheduling a home visit with a SIRA volunteer in your area. After your home visit is completed and approved you will be able to meet available foster dogs! For questions about the adoption process please send an email adoptsirashibas@gmail.com. SIRA depends on foster families as a critical part of our operation. Foster homes help a newly rescued dog adjust to living in a home environment. They work with SIRA to address any medical needs that the dog may have (including spay/neuter) and nurture and socialize the dog to prepare him/her for adoption. Foster families have the right to adopt their foster dog and participate in the process of approving adoption matches. If you're interested in learning more about becoming a foster home, visit www.savingshibas.com/foster or email fostersirashibas@gmail.com.
