Harper's Story
Harper was adopted previously as a young pup, but over the years changes with the family have caused her to not be the best fit for the home. This time around we will really be looking for a good match that sets Harper up for success! Harper was able to return to her original foster home and continues to be a delight for her foster family. But she would like to tell you that in her own words! Here is more about Harper....

I am a DELIGHT. Personality plus over here, and all the basset qualities you could ask for. I am looooooong. So long I may require assistance getting my back end to coordinate with the front when getting in the car or on the couch. So long, I have no trouble getting my nose on to the table or counter. My sniffer is also long and in excellent sniffer condition. My ears are also looooong. I use them to listen for a wrapper to crinkle or a fridge to crack open but I no not use them to listen if someone calls me and I am busy doing dog stuff. I am quick to respond for meal times or things that seem worthy of switching gears. I have had some issues with ear bacteria, which is not why I ignore things but is why I have a cleaner from the vet my mom uses on me every Friday. I tolerate that well as long as she is quick enough to catch me before I shake the drops out.

I love to eat and I am food motivated!!! I cannot be trusted to "free feed" and I will snatch a loaf of bread off the counter or a sandwich from a plate faster than lighting. Apparently this is not allowed here so food is NEVER left unsupervised and I am gated out of the dinning room when people eat. I have the snapper of a mighty crocodile, so treats are handed to me open handed and this is very important. Food takes over rational thinking and in my haste I would certainly cause unintentional harm to fingers or small arms. This is why I should not live with tiny children that may accidentally wave food in my vicinity. Food monitoring is also important because I have allergies. I am currently doing well on a grain free, limited ingredient diet (not prescription) as well as a daily Zyrtec, a Benadryl morning and evening, and 1-2 baths a week with an over the counter medicated shampoo. I was recently on antibiotics to eliminate skin bacteria and anyone with human or dog allergy experience can tell you maintenance is key, but that is likely to adjust over time as well. So I need a dedicated pet parent. Oh, I am not too bad in the bath as I am quite used to it but I'd surely bail out if left unattended.

I love kids, I love people, I love attention and belly scratched and as much attention as you can give and I love laying right on top of my family and making sure there isn't an ounce of air keeping us apart. I am currently warming foster mom's feet while dictating my memoir. My family does leave me alone for short periods of time and I do fine but I am here with my current dog pack. I have not had any issues chewing things that are not toys (I love my toys) and I have not pottied in the house except once which I am sure was not my fault. I do sometimes want to go out in the middle of the night and sing a song of my people into the darkness. I have a voice that carries. Mom never applauds but I do tinkle while I am out so we each get something out of it.

I was a bit stand-off-ish to my fellow canines initially but now I love to instigate play and will bark loudly in their faces if they don't seem to be reading my signals. I should mention I am a somewhat vocal lady with a strong bark. I have leadership skills! I enjoy occasional running and lots of sniffing in my fenced yard. I am a decent walker and often the 11 year old human sister holds my leash. I am a bit overly interested in the resident guinea pigs who are, unfortunately, very secure in their habitat. I also love paper, cannot get enough of it. Homework, tissue, paper towel, toilet paper, paper wrappers, it's all delicious. I also love riding in the car and searching under the seats for garbage. The garbage is on lock down here.

As I may have mentioned, I am a delight. And I have fine tuned my qualities so they aren't about to change. But I know there is a really great home for me where my quirks are easy to accommodate and they will appreciate all the love and humor I carry with me. If that could be you, please fill out the application under the Adoption heading. Once approved, you will be able to connect with my foster family to find out more and decide if I may be the dog you are searching for. In the meantime, you can also read more about our process, adoption fees and expectations.
