Harley's Story

My name is Harley and I’m looking for my forever home! I’m 2 y.o. and weigh 30 lbs. I’m a confident, happy, goofy boy who brings his whole self to the party. I’m not shy or skittish like some Shibas. Strangers? “Hi – I’m so happy to meet you!” Other dogs? “Yippee! Let’s play!” (I hope they like to wrestle and play hard. I might not want to share my treats, though – and I might get jealous if I think they’re getting all the attention.) Kids? “OMG – I love kids!” I got to play with a 2-year-old who walked me around the house on a leash and also a 5-year-old. My enthusiasm might be too much for a really little kids when I jump up, but I don’t mean any harm and will listen well if I’m corrected. Cats? Hm... Not sure. But I like chasing critters outside, so unless the cat is dog-savvy, that might not be a good idea. I’m a very good boy in the house. I’m not destructive and don’t have accidents when my foster family leaves the house, so I don’t need to be crated. One of my favorite things to do is to go for long walks. Foster mom says my leash manners are pretty good! I’m still getting used to my harness – and sometimes I protest when we aren’t walking in the direction I’d like to go. (Have you ever heard of the “Shiba Nope!” I can show you.) I’m pretty vocal and will tell you when I want to go outside or when it’s time to eat. I love laying on the couch and getting belly rubs. I came to my foster home here in Grayslake, IL, after my previous owner couldn’t care for me any longer. I’m a healthy boy – neutered and vaccinated. I’m pretty adaptable, but bonus points if you have a securely fenced yard and/or a kid or two that I can play with. I’d do okay with another resident dog as long as they are laid-back and friendly and don’t mind me wanting to hog the human attention. If you live in the Midwest and want the best boy ever by your side, visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt for more information and to apply to become an approved SIRA adopter. The application process helps SIRA learn more about you and your home to make sure we’ll be a good fit. Once approved, they’ll connect you with my foster mom so we can meet. I can’t wait!!

Shiba Inu Rescue Association's Adoption Policy
So you've seen the beautiful, headstrong breed known as the Shiba Inu. You've researched the breed's characteristics and examined your living situation and decided you are ready to open your home to a Shiba Inu. Here is a brief summary of SIRA's adoption process. For more detailed information please visit our website: www.savingshibas.com/adopt. The best first step if you live in the midwest and are considering adopting from SIRA is to visit our webiste and read through the adoption policies and procedures. Then you can complete our online application to become approved as an adopter. Once you have completed your application, you will receive a confirmation receipt from Google Form. Depending on how many applications we're processing, it may take several days before you hear back. If you have questions about the status of your application, please email adoptsirashibas@gmail.com. The application forms help us learn more about you and your home environment so we can identify any potential challenges and match you with available dogs who will thrive in your home. Once your application is reviewed, our Applicant Approval Coordinator will get in touch with you about scheduling a home visit with a SIRA volunteer in your area. After your home visit is completed and approved you will be able to meet available foster dogs! For questions about the adoption process please send an email adoptsirashibas@gmail.com. SIRA depends on foster families as a critical part of our operation. Foster homes help a newly rescued dog adjust to living in a home environment. They work with SIRA to address any medical needs that the dog may have (including spay/neuter) and nurture and socialize the dog to prepare him/her for adoption. Foster families have the right to adopt their foster dog and participate in the process of approving adoption matches. If you're interested in learning more about becoming a foster home, visit www.savingshibas.com/foster or email fostersirashibas@gmail.com.
