Meet Hank

Hello, my name is Hank and I hail from Texas. My previous family was splitting up and could not keep all 6 of us dogs so they let the youngest 3 go. I am a nervous young boy and need an understanding home that will let me adjust at my own pace, but I am very smart, a good listener, and learn commands well. Because I am skittish, a home with young kids would not be a good fit. I love my foster mom now, but I am unsure of any new visitors and will bark to let everyone know. As I mentioned, I have lived with and gotten along with a variety of other dogs. But like people, I need dogs that will be understanding and give me a few days to warm up to them and not be in my face immediately. I do like to play and run around with other dogs.

I am also looking for a home with a fenced yard. My foster mom says I act like I have never been allowed to run free and was only on a leash or tie-out. I am so excited to zoom around my current yard, and I am fast! As a basset mix, I am more energetic than your typical basset so I do need the extra exercise. We generally walk every day too and I am great on a leash. I like playing chase with other dogs. I have not, however, paid any attention to cats I have met.

When I first arrive, I had a few accidents in the house. But now that I have the hang of things, I make sure to let someone know I need to go out. I'll even stand on my mom's face if I am awake and need to potty. Let me tell you, that sure works well. I do like to sleep in bed with her. She is gone during the day and can trust me while she is gone, though I am ready to potty when she gets home. I was crated previously and like the security of going to my crate when I am unsure, but she leaves me to free roam in the house when she goes to work.

My foster mom recommends a moderately quiet home for me that will be able to monitor me for signs that I feel uncomfortable or scared. I get a little protective of my new foster mom and would likely do so with my new family so I will need ongoing work to correct any unwanted behavior or a family that can separate me from a situation where I am stressed. I can be protective of toys I am playing with too, so again I need to be with other dog savvy dogs that respect warning signs. I am very affectionate and loving once I am comfortable and snuggling is one of my favorite things. I also enjoy stuffies (especially the squeaker). My mom really thinks I am funny at meal times because I wait patiently while my fur siblings get their food until she tells me it is okay to eat mine. She has been feeding me Science Diet Sensitive Skin and Stomach because I was itching in the first few weeks and that has improved. However, that could also be a reaction to the change in environment from Texas to Wisconsin.
