Gumdrop's Story

Gumdrop meets you at the gate with her whole head pushed through it, tongue out, in case you were considering walking past.

She is a petite girl just under a year old and about 40 pounds, apricot and white in uneven patches, with a white blaze down her face, a freckled muzzle and amber eyes. She came in as a stray and her hold is over, so she is looking for her people now.

Gumdrop likes everybody. She is friendly the moment she meets you, she is playful, and she is affectionate in the whole body way that young dogs are. She is also dog friendly, so she does not have to be an only dog, and at 40 pounds she fits in places a bigger dog does not. She is small enough for an apartment and young enough to learn whatever your life asks of her.

A few honest things before you apply. She came to us as a stray, so we do not know what her life looked like before this and we cannot tell you what she has lived with. She has not been around children or cats that we know of, so we cannot tell you how she would do living with either. She is also under a year old, which means she still has some growing up to do, and she needs a home that wants to do that part with her rather than one expecting a finished dog.

We prefer to schedule appointments for meet and greets to make sure someone is available to spend time with you. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 12pm to 4pm, and appointments outside of those hours may be available based on volunteer availability. Petersburg Animal Care & Control's Adoption Policy
Thank you for your interest in adopting from Petersburg Animal Care & Control! We’re so glad you’re considering giving a shelter pet a loving home. We do not charge an adoption fee; however, all animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and the cost of the procedure is covered by the adopter. We’re happy to support adopters by coordinating appointments with our low-cost veterinary partners for spay/neuter services and other basic care needs. Adoption Process • We prefer to schedule appointments for meet-and-greets to ensure that staff or volunteers are available to spend adequate time helping you get to know the animal. • When you arrive, please sign in and wait to be escorted by a staff member or volunteer before entering the kennel areas. • For safety reasons, please do not reach into kennels or attempt to touch animals through barriers. If you’re interested in a particular pet, our team will bring them to a meet-and-greet area for proper introductions. • After your visit, you’re welcome to submit an adoption application. Applications must be approved before we can schedule a meet-and-greet with your family pets. • Meet-and-greets with personal pets are by appointment only, and for safety, two staff members must be present to handle all animals involved. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make each match the best fit possible — both for our animals and their future families.
