GROOT's Story

MEET GROOT!

At 13 years young, Groot may be in his golden years, but his heart (and personality!) are as vibrant as ever. After spending his entire life with one family, he was recently surrendered to animal control alongside his two canine companions when his owner had to move. When the shelter got full, Groot was timestamped for euthanasia; luckily City of Elderly Love stepped in and whisked him away to safety in foster care. He’s now ready to find a soft place to spend his golden years!

Groot is the definition of a well-mannered housemate. His foster parents are experienced fosters and mentioned how Groot is one of the easier fosters they've had! He’s fully house trained, crate trained, and walks beautifully on leash, making him an easy and enjoyable companion for daily routines. Even better? He’s lived happily with cats and other dogs, so he already knows how to be part of a busy, loving home. Groot gets along with his foster (dog) sister amazingly well. Foster sis is pretty sensitive with new dogs but has taken to Groot extremely quickly. Groot is very polite with greetings, not overly interested, and reacts well to foster sister's corrections when he gets too close to her on the couch.

If there’s one thing you should know about Groot, it’s this: toys are his absolute favorite thing in the world. Whether it’s a squeaky toy, a plush, or anything he can proudly carry, Groot is happiest when he has a toy by his side. He’ll happily bring one along on walks, parade it around like a prized possession, and spend hours entertaining himself. Despite his love for toys, he’s not possessive—just purely joyful! Usually, Groot will go through phases of picking one toy as his most prized possession and bring it everywhere: out to pee, up to bed, for cuddle time with his humans. It's such a joyful experience to see a senior enjoy their golden years! With that said, Groot can get a little barky when he’s overstimulated or excited while playing with his toys so we’ve found that he does best with limited access to them at night so he can have quiet, chill-out time and so he doesn’t wake you up with his squeaky balls at 3am.

Groot is looking for a loving home that will cherish him for the sweet, playful, and loyal companion he is. A family who understands that senior dogs still have so much love (and fun!) to give, and who can offer him comfort and lots of cozy moments. If you’re ready to give a deserving senior boy the happily-ever-after he deserves, Groot’s your boy! For more Groot content, feel free to follow his foster mom on Instagram at @adoptwithakila.

Groot is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. He has been vetted since coming to the rescue. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Interested in adopting him? Visit cityofelderlylove.org to complete an online adoption questionnaire.
