Gretta

Gretta arrived at Henry County Animal Care & Control in mid-May. She was very shy and seemed to have no idea how she had ended up there. At the time, I was a kennel technician, and I cared for Gretta every day. Each morning, I would walk the dogs outside, and I always looked forward to taking her out.<br/><br/>At the shelter, you meet all kinds of dogs. Some are extremely hyper, some are nervous, and some struggle around other dogs. But then there was Gretta.<br/><br/>Gretta was different. She was calm, gentle, and incredibly sweet. She looked forward to going outside, but she was never rude or pushy. She didnt demand attention or ask for anything. She was simply happy that someone had taken the time to take her outside and give her some love.<br/><br/>Day after day, the weeks turned into months, and no one chose her.<br/><br/>She may have been pulled for a visitation or two, but no one ever made her part of their family. As the days continued to pass, I started to worry that Gretta might never get the chance to know what it felt like to have a home.<br/><br/>Toward the end of July, I moved up from a kennel technician and became an Animal Control Officer. Because I was spending more time out on the road, I didnt get to see Gretta nearly as often. But I asked about her constantly, always hoping to hear that someone had finally chosen her.<br/><br/>Instead, I was waiting for the news I never wanted to hear.<br/><br/>I knew Gretta wasnt at risk because of behavioral issues. Her demeanor was nearly perfect. If she ever ended up on the euthanasia list, I knew it would likely be because of space—not because she had done anything wrong.<br/><br/>And then that day came.<br/><br/>When I found out Gretta had been placed on the euthanasia list, I went straight back into the kennel to see her. I opened her door and sat with her, giving her all the love I could while preparing myself to say goodbye to a beautiful soul who had never even been given a real chance.<br/><br/>I couldnt let it happen.<br/><br/>I immediately asked for Gretta to be pulled from the list, and I told them I would take her home.<br/><br/>I applied to become her foster, completed the house check, got approved, and before I knew it, the dog I had spent months caring for at the shelter was coming home with me.<br/><br/>Now, every day, I look into those big, sweet eyes and feel so grateful that I chose her.<br/><br/>Since coming home, Ive gotten to see even more of Grettas personality come out. She is incredibly smart, knows how to sit, and is one of the most patient dogs Ive ever met. And although she is still a gentle and calm girl, she has a playful side too! She absolutely loves her squeaky toys and gets so excited when she gets to play with them. Watching her discover these little joys of being a dog has been so special.<br/><br/>Gretta has the sweetest soul and doesnt ask for much. She just wants to feel safe, feel loved, and finally know what it means to belong to someone.<br/><br/>After everything she has been through, Gretta deserves to know the love of a family. She deserves a warm bed, a couch to curl up on, someone to come home to, toys to call her own, and a place she can finally call hers.<br/><br/>I truly believe Gretta is going to make her future family feel whole.<br/><br/>She spent months waiting for someone to choose her.<br/><br/>This time, Im making sure she gets the chance to be chosen. <br/><br/>Thank you for your interest in one of our Hero Babies! Before inquiring, we thought it was important to share a few of our policies. <br/><br/>Your Current Pets - We do require that your current dogs and cats are current on vaccines and spayed/neutered. <br/><br/>Adoptions - We do not have a shelter and are a foster-home based organization. We do require that you have an approved adoption application to schedule a meet and greet. You can fill out an adoption application on our website, www.herorescue.org/adopt. Once your application is approved it will be sent to the foster family that is currently caring for the dog. They will be able to provide information on likes, dislikes, personality, etc. They will also schedule a time for you to meet the dog.
