Gretchen's Story
IMPORTANT - HOW TO APPLY: If you're interested in meeting Gretchen, you need to first submit an application on our website: winonahumane.org/adopt. Our Canine Director will then contact you to set up a time to visit (our building is operating with scheduled visits). Please email with any questions about Gretchen or her adoption process!

Personality description:
Gretchen’s the ideal blend of an old soul and a sassy queen bee filled with personality, ready to be your center of attention – as she deserves!

Although she’s very young herself, Gretchen had to grow up quickly to care for four puppies when she wasn’t even a year old. To make matters worse, they were all abandoned and are lucky to have survived. A foster home stepped up to give this little family a soft place to land and finally feel loved.

Now that the puppies are starting their own adventures, Gretchen’s spent her time decompressing and showing off all her delightful qualities. She’s intelligent and attentive, picking up new skills with her treat-motivation while aiming to please. She’s fully potty trained and shows good leash manners on her daily outings.

Gretchen spent time in a hopeful foster-to-adopt home that, while it didn’t work out long-term, helped us learn valuable information. Gretchen gets along with female dogs of all ages and sizes, although she prefers those who share her love of playtime and chase. She’s polite and patient during mealtimes, and easily picks up on household rules from canine companions.

A medium to high energy household would suit Gretchen well – somewhere that she can get her daily walks and playtime, then settle in for cozy cuddles. She does struggle with separation anxiety so it’s important she has sufficient company throughout the day.

It may take a bit of time for Gretchen’s nerves to calm before she shows her sweetheart side, but once you’re in her inner circle of trust, she’s a friend for life! Gretchen loves her people, always showing her excitement and appreciation of their company.

Anyone would be lucky to have Gretchen as their companion, and she deserves so much more than her tumultuous first year of life. Should you read this profile and feel you’re just what Gretchen needs, send in an online application on winonahumane.org/adopt to get started!

Additional bio info: female, brindle Boxer mix, 1 year old, medium size (~42lbs), up-to-date on vaccinations, waiting for spay & microchip appointment
- Good with female dogs of various ages and sizes (prefers playful friends)
- May be best suited around older kids due to her excitement/strength
- Tall fenced in yard a plus
- Important note: Gretchen is available for visits, but she is waiting to be spayed prior to adoption
