Grappler (Furever Foster)'s Story

Behavioral: Grappler was a young, intact male picked up by Calgary Animal Services for wandering at large. He loves his stuffy toys but he would mouth/nip inappropriately if over-excited so CAS transferred him to us as they thought he would be too much for their potential adopters.

He is very affectionate when he accepts you & he is getting much better about not bouncing up or off of us & his excited mouthing has calmed down considerably. But because of his stranger danger issues, we'd recommend an adult only home.

Yet, when people have come to visit us & come into the house, or we've had a dogsitter in for a weekend, he has had no problem meeting them & accepting them in the home.

He is pretty good about meeting other dogs politely & he generally ignores them unless a good game of chase starts. He seems to be rather particular about who his inner circle of friends is - not too many are actually enticed to play with him. He does like his stuffy toys & will amuse himself with some of the yard toys but does not seem particularly interested in the fetch games.

It wasn't until he had a meet and greet that we found out he is quite territorial about strangers coming into his yard/area. He not only stood & barked at them, but he also lunged and nipped a leg. When corrected for doing that, he redirected to my leg and nipped at it, leaving a bruise. He did eventually settle down enough to sit quietly beside me but would not take his eyes of the strangers and no treat was interesting enough to make friends.

AB Herding Dog Rescue's Adoption Policy
Each dog in foster care has their own picture album with a more detailed write up on their history as we know it, the behaviours that we are seeing in foster care and the type of home we think would best suit them. If you are interested in one of our dogs, please check out the detailed profiles for our available dogs at www.albertaherdingdogrescue.com and then email us for an adoption questionnaire. This must be filled out as completely and truthfully as possible and include references. We will consider long distance adoptions but we will not ship our dogs to people or places unknown. We require that adopters travel to meet our dogs, once all steps of the process have been completed. AB-HDR is located approximately 1.5 hours NW of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We are not a shelter with regular office or store hours. Although many of our dogs are located at Cavorting K9s Retreat, all our dogs are fostered in private homes. All visits are by appointment with the foster family.
