Gingerbread's Story

Hello there, I am Gingerbread! I am a really easy dog, in the right set up. To find out what that is, keep reading!

Daily Routine: I tend to be and early riser and I love to go explore the yard for a while. I am not deterred by the cold and sometimes foster mom makes me come in before I am ready. We eat breakfast right away and I love to eat. We all eat separately in this house but i don't think I would appreciate another dog sticking their face in my food. After breakfast I like to run around in the yard again with my coonhound foster brother and maybe bark at some things. Then I lay on the couch and supervise getting ready for school. When mom leaves to drop off the kids, I free roam the house with other dogs, but I howl bloody murder as I do not want to be left. She is usually only gone briefly each day and I bark some more when she returns. She can sometimes hear me from inside her car. I spend the day checking on mom, asking for belly scratches, chewing bones, barking at the mailman, going to play outside a few times, wrestling in the house with other dogs and napping. I have another melt down when mom leaves for school pick up. We are working on getting better in the car so I can go with at times too. I used to cry, whine and fuss for a whole car ride but I am getting better. In the afternoon I am excited to see my kids, and play with them outside or cuddle on the couch. I am always ready for dinner and playing the "I need to go out, I want in, I need to go out" game through the evening. I am a little chunky and very strong so we are working on walking which I really need. I love lounging with the family to watch tv at night. I'd like to sleep with my kids but since I usually have to go outside a few times after they go to sleep, I sadly cannot. I do usually go between the living room couch at night and my parents' bed and I do not have accidents in the house, but generally tap dance around until mom wakes to let me outside potty once or twice a night.

What I love to do: I love walks, belly scratches, playing outside and human attention! I was a bit reserved and occasionally snarky with other dogs at first, but now I lay with them during the day and wrestle, run and play. I just needed to get comfortable as I lived in my previous home with my previous companions my whole life. I do not like to be alone so I do need a home with other friendly dogs.

Personal goals: I am a vocal gal at times. When someone leaves, I do not like it and can be the very loudest dog my mom has ever heard-and she has a coonhound. I have not been destructive or naughty, I just project my voice. I have always had a stay at home mom and still I don't love being left so I need a home with someone there frequently. I am well behaved when left with my other companions, up to a few hours at a time. I would obviously not do well in a situation with very close neighbors. I also need work getting used to frequent, short car rides so I can settle sown for that. and I need regular walks to get better on a leash and lose a pinch of weight. My doctor says a lot of my size is actually muscle.

Favorite thing to do with my best friend: I love to run and wrestle and bark and sniff with other dogs I am comfortable with. I enjoy playing in the snow and cuddling on the couch with people.

Kind of family do I want: I need a family with at least another dog that likes me and wants to interact. I need someone home frequently. I can be left for a few hours at a time but would not do well with a family that was gone daily for fulltime work, etc. I would be much easier, and do much better, with a fenced yard. I will happily go outside no matter the weather and do my business and get some exercise, and I tend to go out pretty regularly-including once or twice at night. I will be very noisy and unsettled if I cannot get out so mom knows I need to go. I cannot live with close neighbors, like a duplex, etc, as they would not likely appreciate my singing voice.

Biggest fears: I do NOT want to be left and will express this vocally. It is best to make leaving quick as I will fuss the whole time, but do not bark the whole time I am alone. When left for 30 min-a few hours, I have not been destructive and have not had potty accidents. I am left with my other dog companions and TV.

Ideal weekend plans: I am a fan of people and other dogs and I like to be with them.

While I might sound like a bit of a handful, I am actually quite easy in a home that can accommodate these needs, so while all applications will be considered-first priority will be given to any that are already set up for my success and a smooth transition. I have been a lovely addition to my foster home and go with the flow in a lot of ways. I will certainly be missed around here but I am looking forward to my own home and family. To apply to find out more about me and be considered for my future home, please fill out the application on our website www.bassetbuddiesrescue.org under the "Adoption" heading and a volunteer will be in touch.
