Gilbert's Story

Gilbert. Gilbert Gumdrops. Mr. Gilbert. No matter what name you know him by, one thing is certain: Gilbert is a world class tug of war champion, a highly skilled keep away expert, and an elite level couch cuddler.

This very special boy has come such a long way. One fall evening, Gilbert was found under a parked car in the Arts District. It was dark, cold, and he was in rough shape. Thankfully, three friends teamed up to get him safely off the street. Gilbert had a broken hip and was understandably wary of people, but with help from CARES and Hope for Paws, he got the surgeries he needed and made a full recovery.

Now, Gilbert is thriving.

He trusts his foster parents, loves neighborhood walks, enjoys romping in the yard and visiting the park, and has blossomed into a tenacious, curious, smart, and deeply loving dog. His confidence has grown so beautifully that his foster dog sister is even more confident on walks when they are together. He loves playing with her, running around, and engaging in some playful roughhousing. He also does his best to respect the personal space of his cat foster siblings and, most of the time, succeeds.

Gilbert is fond of most people, does well with young children, and is enjoying learning basic commands. He responds to his name, loves daily obedience practice, and continues to show just how bright and eager he is. He has also become quite the handsome guy, with a shiny coat and the sweetest frosted gray curls on top of his head.

We are not exactly sure what Gilbert’s breed mix is, and the guesses have been very fun. Some people think he may have a little Xoloitzcuintli in him, while others have guessed Terrier, Poodle, or Whippet. Our official stance is that Gilbert is simply Gilbert: one of a kind and impossible not to love.

Basically, Gilbert is everything you could imagine and then some.

If you’re looking for a playful, affectionate, resilient dog with a huge heart and an even bigger personality, Gilbert might just be your guy.
