Flash's Story
Flash joined Mattie's Place in August from an Ontario shelter. He was found as a stray but had a dog tag with his name and phone number on it. When the number was called, the person on the other end of the line said they rehomed Flash because of his separation anxiety but no longer had any information on who they rehomed him too. So, in order to get Flash out of the shelter, which he wasn't coping with, he was transferred to the care of Mattie's Place.

Flash is estimated to be between 2-3 years old (for sure not older than 3 years). He weighed in at 12.5 pounds on August 28th and has a good body condition score.

He can be a little bit of a picky eater, so with thanks to Tom & Sawyer Gently Cooked Dog Food, his meals are sponsored while he's in foster care. Flash LOVES, LOVES, LOVES his Tom & Sawyer meals and GOBBLES them up! Tom & Sawyer is nutritionally balanced canine food with recipes that are healthy & prepared specifically for canines. This no muss, no fuss food has Flash's heart, so Tom & Sawyer has agreed to extending a lifetime 25% discount to any adopter that wants to keep Flash on their diet. His adopter can also transition him to kibble, but keep Tom & Sawyer as a topper to the kibble to keep the nutrition high and satisfy his palate.

Dachshunds are highly desired, but they are not the easiest dogs to share your life with and Flash is no exception. They are incredibly smart dogs. Also super loyal and dedicated to their humans. They are often suspicious dogs and can be quite vocal, as Flash is. Flash also exhibits vocal separation anxiety so he'll need someone home most often. Understanding everyone has a life outside of their dog, Flash will do best in a home that doesn't share walls, so when he does have to be home alone, he won't be disruptive to neighbours.

Though he's a small boy, Flash will require regular exercise to ensure his weight is maintained and to help keep his muscles strong so the risk of injury to his back is lessened. Though having a "long" dog is adorable, they are also at risk of back injury and must remain fit to support themselves best. He will also require dog stairs so he's not injuring himself by jumping on and off higher objects in the home like a couch.

Preference will be given to previous Dachshund owners who fully understand the breed and their needs but that doesn't mean I wouldn't consider other applicants willing to put the work in to educate themselves on the breed and have dog experience to bring to the adoption table.

Flash is very fear-vocal when meeting new people in new situations. This can be super intimidating to people who meet him and this fear is always a "bite-risk" for a dog but I believe he can overcome with the right handler and professional training.

Flash can live harmoniously with other dogs, providing the other dogs are well mannered. He's not cat tested and given the breed likely not cat friendly. No kids under the age of 14. Can he be around kids under 14? Absolutely. Should he live with them, I don't believe so.

Flash will be an amazing companion to someone willing to take on a bit of a project dog and put the work in with a professional trainer to help him be the very best version of himself.

FROM THE FOSTER:

Flash is so happy and cuddly once he gets to know you. He will bark quite a lot at new people he sees and meets, especially men, but if you are calm, friendly and give him food you will win him over in no time.

Flash loves to play and rip all the stuffing out of every toy he finds and will comically pick the biggest toys from the basket to drag onto the couch. He's understanding the concept of fetch and is super food motivated. He plays very respectfully with all dogs he's met and gives them plenty of space. He loves to give kisses and will repeatedly attempt to stick his whole tongue into your mouth so watch out!

Flash loves his Tom & Sawyer food which he gobbles up. He eats 300g per day split into 2 servings.

He is completely house trained and does all his business outside. We usually go for a walk around 7am, 2pm, 7pm and midnight.

He loves to bury himself under the blankets and he sleeps in a nest on the couch. He can't jump very high with his short little legs but is comfortable using doggy steps to the couch.

He will alert bark to noises in the hall and has quite a bit of separation anxiety when left alone. He gets left behind with our other resident dog, when we do solo walks with our other foster dog. He cries and whines until we're back.

With some diligent training and companionship Flash will make the best little buddy for years to come.

----------------------------------------

ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leash|collar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.

----------------------------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in it's current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.
