She’s a special girl who has clearly been through a lot, but every day she shows just how much love she has to give.

Fern is very affectionate with people and kids — she loves belly rubs, gazes deeply into your eyes, and wags her tail happily while spending time with her humans. She enjoys being near people and is content to quietly sit by your side while you work or chat. She’s not needy or high-energy — just a calm, loving companion. She’s even gentle and comfortable around young children.

Because of her past, Fern takes a little time to build trust. She raised puppies on her own and learned to be independent, so new relationships happen at her pace. She may be a little shy at first — often choosing to sit off to the side with new people — but she warms up with patience and kindness. Fern happily accepts treats (though she’s not overly food-driven) and expresses her excitement with the cutest, joyful vocalizations when it’s time to play, eat, or come inside.

Fern also carries a physical reminder of her past — she was shot in the shoulder with birdshot, which caused her shoulder to fuse. Despite this, she still loves to run and explore when given the chance, often breaking into joyful zoomies in a secure yard. She settles beautifully indoors, is fully potty trained, and has excellent house manners. With simple pain management (like Carprofen), she stays comfortable and happy.

Fern would do best as the only dog in the home. While she has been friendly with some dogs, her history of protecting her puppies means she prefers not to share her space.

💕 Fern has known hardship, but she’s ready for a peaceful, loving home where she can continue to feel safe, build trust, and simply be cherished. If you’re looking for a loyal, gentle companion with a resilient heart, Fern might be your girl.

What are you waiting for? Friends of Wind River Humane Society's Adoption Policy
At Friends of Wind River Humane Society, our adoption process is designed to set both dogs and adopters up for long-term success. We take the time to ensure each placement is a thoughtful match, prioritizing the well-being, safety, and happiness of every animal and family. Our adoption process includes the following steps: 1. Submission of online application by prospective adopter - this includes collecting key information such as household details, existing pets, vet references, landlord approval (if renting), and experience with animals. 2. Detailed application review by a member of our team - one of our dedicated volunteers/team members carefully reviews each application, looking for the best match for the animal’s needs. 3. Phone/virtual screening by a member of our team - one of our dedicated volunteers/team members, often from one of our foster caregivers, walk through the application questions in more detail, giving our team a solid understanding of the prospective adopter's lifestyle, expectations, experience with animals, etc. 4. "Meet and greet" with dog(s) of interest/compatibility - prospective adopters are invited to meet the animal, ideally in person if location permits or via video; if adopters have other pets and location permits, a controlled meet-and-greet might be arranged at this stage. 5. Final approval and adoption - if our team and the prospective adopter feel positive and wish to proceed following the "meet and greet, " an adoption agreement is signed and transport is arranged for the dog to their new home; depending on distance, this could include transport support provided by our organization; adopters are provided documentation of all medical history, microchip information, etc.
