FERGIE's Story

They call me Fergus.

I was rescued running two blocks from the Shawnee Animal Shelter in the heat of the Oklahoma summer. You see, the shelter only takes stray animals in if they have an open cage, and it doesn't take owner surrenders at all. The rescue that found me has decided that the family of my person dumped me after trying to take me to that pound, and it was full. They think maybe my person got sick, went into a nursing home, or maybe died. They've seen that a lot, especially when the extended family members can't or won't take the pet into their own home.

I don't mind the name Fergus, I just wish I could tell them my real name. I wish I could tell them my story; where I came from, why I was abandoned, why I'm so scared to be with people and so scared to be here. Some of the assumptions they've made are right, but there's more to me; more to my past. I am, though, looking for my future. I think that's how all the dogs they've rescued feel about things. I must be afraid that this is my future.

The "they" I talk about have tried hard to make me feel more comfortable. They are Saving Pets At Risk. I realize that was me. No, that IS me. I'm a tiny bit less terrified than I was when I came here, but I'm still scared; Confused. Even though they sing to me, sit quietly with me, talk sweetly to me, and made me a room in a quiet office - I still don't like it here.

Sherry calls me Fergie. She says I'm cute and she likes me, I can tell. She says "Hello Fergie" in a kind and loving way. She giggles when she opens the door and I run past her as fast as I possibly can to go outside. I run back just as fast. I'm pretty sure there's a video of this.

If I weren't so scared of them and my surroundings I might have found a forever family already. But, I know it's hard for them to assess my personality. They are afraid to try new things because it might set me back on the little progress I have made.

It'll be a very special person that Sherry will let me go live with. She already said that. Though I really do need a person to love me, and I'd feel calm because I'd feel safe.

-- Fergus is estimated to be 2-years-old (as of 2021)
-- Mixed breed (part Cardigan Corgi, unsure of other breeds)
-- Beautiful, wavy, mid-length coat
-- Will be neutered before adoption
-- Had a past leg injury/broken leg that healed without vet care, doesn't seem
to bother him now, may bother him as he ages
-- Microchipped
-- Current on vaccinations/shots
-- On Heartworm preventative (heartworm negative)
-- Flea/tick preventative
-- Nervous, seems afraid most of the time, often retreats to a corner
-- Dog Respectful, Older Children - Good fit
-- House-broken/house trained, does mark if around male dogs
-- Good with female dogs, seems to enjoy their company

Because of his nervousness, we have yet to determine the following:
-- Leash trained= unknown
-- Uses a pet door= unknown
-- Kennel/crate trained= unknown
-- Travels well in a car= unknown
-- Favorite play activities/toys= unknown
-- Cats= unknown

To help us ensure the best forever-match, we require the following:
-- Complete & submit an adoption application.
-- Compatibility testing by a SPAR director to ensure the applicant's pets get
along with our rescue.
-- Home visits are conducted prior to any adoption.
