Ernie's Story
All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, dewormed (if required), and microchipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

For more information and adoption applications please consult our website at www.pounddog.ca.

Hi! My name is Ernie and I’m a 1.5year old Terrier /Shih Tzu X. I’m a small but robust little guy weighing in at 15lbs. Somehow, by no fault of my own, I ended up a rural animal control facility where no one came to claim me...that is until Pound Dog showed up and gave me a new life! I’m loving my new life in foster care and learning lots of new things but am currently searching for a family that will take care of me and love me forever! Let me tell you about myself!

First off, I am shy and timid around new people. It will take me awhile to get to know you but once I trust you I will be your best friend. When new people come to the house, or I go to someone else’s house, I am shy and tend to hide behind my foster mom; but, if people are calm and patient with me I slowly warm up to them. I haven’t been exposed to children in foster care but when I meet children on my walks I get nervous. I would prefer to be in an adult only home where small children don’t visit. The noise and quick movements of children scare me. But I will be a very best friend and companion to an adult or adults who have a quiet home and are looking for a fun friend. I need more socialization and know that I will only get more confident with stagers as I experience more.

The first thing my foster mom learned about me was that I love to play fetch! I mean REALLY like to play fetch. When I got home from the pound the first thing I did, after getting a bath of course, was pick up a ball and start playing with it. I will bring the ball back and drop it at your feet every time. As long as you are willing to keep throwing the ball, or any toy really, I will chase it and bring it back. I also enjoy playing with my toys by myself. If you don’t want to throw it for me I’m happy to walk around throwing it myself and squeaking the squeaky toys. Toys are the best!!

Walks are another one of my favourite things. Currently, I go for about 2+ walks a day - about 30 minutes and 15 minutes but I can certainly go for longer walks and would love that in fact. I know the word walk and my foster moms have to be careful with that word unless they are serious or I get very excited. I have learned that I have to sit at the door calmly to get my leash on and that I need to walk nicely at my foster mom’s side. I do not pull. Although...I do like to chase squirrels and rabbits. That’s the terrier coming out in me. My leash prevents me from getting very far and my foster moms don’t seem impressed. I guess that’s something I should work on. Sometimes I get too excited when passing another dog and jump and bark at them...again, a bad terrier habit. This is also something I am working on and my new family will need to continue my training. I need to go to dog school with my new family to learn new skills with them.

Despite occasionally barking at other dogs on my walks, I do enjoy the company of other dogs. I have met a big dog and a small dog and after a proper introduction I have got along with both. I would be happy in a home with or without another dog. There are no cats in my foster home but my foster parents think I would be fine in a home with a dog-savvy cat who won’t run from me, because if they run or hiss and spit that is an invitation for me to give chase!

Cuddles are also great! I like to cuddle for a short period of time and then will lie on the floor for a while before returning to cuddle. I also like to give out the occasional kiss but am not overly licky. Car rides are fun too. I enjoy getting to go places with my people and will happily jump in the car and sit wherever you would like me. On long car rides, my favourite place is on the floor by the passenger’s feet. I will curl up at your passenger’s feet and sleep the whole way.

I am fully house trained and have had no accidents in the house. My foster parents take me outside regularly so I rarely have to communicate that I need to go outside, but when I do, I whine and they let me out. I’m relatively quiet in the house, only barking when I feel that I need to alert my people to something. At night I sleep in a crate. I also go in my crate when my foster parents leave. I get treats when I go in my crate and will voluntarily go in when my foster parents say crate because I know I’m going to get a treat! I’m never left alone for more than 5 hours at a time and would prefer a home where I am not left alone all day. Going places with my humans is great! I’ve been to other people’s houses and have been a perfect house guest. I would like a family that will include me as a member of the family in activities. As for my future home, a house or townhouse with yard where I can run around would be preferable, but I would also be fine in an apartment as long as I get my daily walks and running play.

Overall, my foster family says I’m fairly easy to live with. I am patient, gentle, playful, and affectionate. I would be thrilled to find my forever home. Is that you? I can’t wait to meet you! ~Ernie
