Emma's Story

Emma / Female / Approx. 1 Year / 35 lbs / Terrier X / Good with Dogs / Good with Dog Savvy Kids / Untested with Cats / From Mexico / Fostered in Toronto

**Follow Emma’s journey on Instagram: @Apple.the.potato

Emma’s story begins in a severely overcrowded home where resources were limited, but despite that start, she has remained incredibly gentle, affectionate, and full of quiet love. She’s now ready to leave that chapter behind and find a calm, patient home where she can truly come into her own.

Emma is a soft, sensitive soul with a calm, balanced energy. She is deeply affectionate. Once she feels safe, she leans into her people, gives the sweetest “sneak attack” nose kisses, and will gently place her paws on your shoulders for a hug before covering you in kisses. She loves being cozy, whether that’s curled up on the couch, in bed, or tucked into her crate, happily soaking up affection.

With familiar people, Emma is loving and trusting, greeting them with tail wags and quietly asking for scratches—sometimes venturing out of her crate, sometimes choosing to stay in her safe space while still engaging. With new people, she is timid at first and prefers to observe from a distance, but she warms up with time, patience, and gentle encouragement.

Emma is still building confidence in the world around her. Loud noises, busy environments, and sudden movements can feel overwhelming, and she will often retreat to her crate where she feels safest. She is not reactive or aggressive in any way; just a sensitive dog learning that the world is safe. With consistency and a calm environment, she continues to make steady progress.

Emma would thrive in a quieter home with a predictable routine and someone who understands that confidence takes time. She would do best in a lower-traffic environment in a quiet neighbourhood without a lot of noise or constant comings and goings. A patient person or family—someone who values a deeply bonded, cuddly companion—would be perfect for her. She would especially suit someone home often, or a more relaxed household where she can settle in at her own pace.

Emma enjoys gentle enrichment like chew toys, slow feeders, and carrying her favourite toys into her crate. She has a playful side that shows up in her own way, often through curiosity and a love of “redecorating” soft toys. She is also a water-loving girl at heart and may grow to enjoy outdoor adventures as her confidence builds.

She isn't the most playful around other dogs, but she is curious and has shown she'll engage play mode after she's had time to warm up to a canine companion. She may benefit from a calm, confident older dog, but would also do well as the only dog in a home where she can build confidence at her own pace. She has not been tested with cats and is currently looking for a cat-free home.

Emma is still working on a few foundational skills. She is currently using puppy pads reliably and will need continued support transitioning to outdoor potty training, but she’s showing signs of progress. She is not yet comfortable on a leash or going for walks, but with patience and positive reinforcement, she has the potential to build these skills over time. She settles well when left alone and is comfortable in her crate or a safe space.

Emma is so gentle, loyal, and incredibly sweet. She’s just waiting for someone to give her the time and space to feel safe. In return, she’ll offer a level of connection and affection that is truly special.

If you’re interested in adopting Emma, please apply at
https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form

Emma’s adoption fee is $850.
