Emilio's Story

Emilio is a 2-year-old male hound mix weighing 45 lbs. He originally came to Canada from Mexico through a rescue organization as a puppy, arriving very sick and emaciated.
While in our care, Emilio has shown himself to be an intelligent, affectionate, playful, and eager-to-learn companion. But he also has been fearful of new people and takes time to feel comfortable and confident. Once he trusts you, he is incredibly sweet and cuddly. Emilio already knows several commands and absolutely loves training. His favourite trick is "middle," where he'll happily trot between your legs, sit proudly, and wait for his well-earned praise and treats.

Training & Behaviour

Emilio has shown some signs of:
Fearfulness around new people and unfamiliar situations
Sensitivity to sudden noises and unexpected events
Dog reactivity toward some dogs
Stress in busy or unpredictable environments
Alert barking in apartment-style living situations

Emilio is looking for an adopter who can continue helping him build confidence through patient, positive training. New sights, sounds, people and situations can sometimes be overwhelming for him, but with consistency and encouragement, Emilio has shown great potential for growth.

Ideal Home

Emilio would do best in a home that:
Provides a calm, predictable environment with minimal chaos
Has experienced, patient adopters committed to continuing his training and confidence-building

Children: Adult-only home

Dogs: Emilio should be the only dog in the home. He has made dog friends while in our care, enjoys walking alongside other dogs, and can be playful in the right setting. However, because he can be reactive toward some dogs, he is not a suitable candidate for dog parks. He would do best with a few trusted canine friends and thoughtful introductions.

Cats: Yes. Emilio was cat tested and showed a positive response. He could do well with a cat friendly home.

Emilio would benefit from an experienced home or adopters willing to work with a professional trainer using force-free, low-stress methods. Due to his sensitivity to environmental triggers and tendency to bark at noises, he is not suited to apartment living.

Final Notes

Loves treats, training, and showing off his impressive skills
Smart, eager to learn, and highly motivated by praise and rewards
Need an experianced new handler/ adopter
Still building confidence but making great progress
If you're looking for a loyal, affectionate companion and are willing to give him the time he needs to settle in, Emilio could be the perfect match for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
All adult dogs at Animal Services have veterinary health checks, and are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed (if necessary) before going to their new homes.
Children: No
Cats: Yes
Dogs: Best as solo dog
Training Needs: Confidence building
Adoption Fee: $391

If you live in the City of Vancouver, you will also need to purchase a dog licence.

For more information on our adoption process, go to vancouver.ca/adopt
