Duster, weighing in at 4.2 KG or 9 pounds was dumped in a rural field and left to die alongside multiple other Shih Tzu (mixes) in June.<br/><br/>They were found in poor condition and suffering from sarcoptic mange, a highly contagious skin disease caused by burrowing mites into the skin, causing intense itching, inflammation and skin infection.<br/><br/>The treatment: flea & tick medication which he has received along with some supportive skin medications. By adoption he will no longer be contagious but any resident dogs must be on a prevention that manages mites just as an extra layer of precaution. Mattie's Place will ensure Duster has 3 months of prevention treatment which will get him through the treatment period.<br/><br/>Duster had an umbilical hernia repaired at his neuter, he had some baby teeth that had not fallen out removed to ensure his oral health is in good condition and he's on a healing journey with his medical past in the rearview mirror.<br/><br/>Duster may not have full coat growth back. We just don't know the extent of the follicle damage and the ability for the coat to grow back.<br/><br/>Duster is being fostered with Buster and he's the very sweetest boy. Friendly, though shy, but just a good dog through and through.<br/><br/>He's learning how to be a companion pet, but has really embraced human kindness and loves the attention and easy lifestyle he's living. <br/><br/>He's currently being fostered in a condo and doing well, but would very likely love a secured backyard for more off leash freedom and less stress that comes with sidewalks and the hustle and bustle of city life.<br/><br/>Duster would do best with a WFH or home most often adopter. An adopter that is patient, tolerant and kind with an understanding to the trauma this dog has endured. An adopter willing to meet Duster right where he is today in his growth and not have high expectations, allowing him to blossom as a companion dogs at his speed and comfort level. <br/><br/>All of these Shih Tzu's are really exceptional dogs and given the hell they must have endured in their lifetime, they are most certainly forgiving to humans, as their sweetness shines through.<br/><br/>Not cat tested, but I can't imagine an issue with a dog friendly cat. Not kid tested, but I'm sure he'd be fine around visiting kids but I don't think living with young kids full time would be his vibe.<br/><br/><br/>FROM THE FOSTER:<br/><br/>Duster may be a bit unsure of people at first, but once he decides he trusts you, he is all in with love. <br/><br/>Duster is still figuring out how to dog but he tentatively plays with toys, walks nicely on a leash, and will potty as soon as you take him outside to a grassy spot. <br/><br/>He doesn't prefer to be outside very long and is happy to go right back in once he has finished his business. He is still working on potty training and having an accident once in a while in the condo, but he does know how to use a pee pad.<br/><br/>Duster will happily snooze by himself on the couch (his favourite spot) while you do your thing, and will eagerly snuggle up with you when he's comfortable.<br/><br/>He has some separation anxiety and struggles with being crated alone, but does sleep overnight in the crate by himself. He may cry and bark but he will settle himself down quickly. <br/><br/>He has had short introductions to other dogs his size with no issues. Duster is more of a stay-at-home and chill little fellow, with a calm, gentle, and quiet demeanour.<br/><br/>He currently eats 2 times a day, and goes outside for potty 4 times a day.<br/><br/>---------------------------------------<br/><br/>$875 ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leashcollar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.<br/><br/>----------------------------------------<br/><br/>To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in it's current & previous setting.
