Duke's Story
Duke has a few theories about the world. He has questions. He has concerns. He is not always convinced that whatever is happening around him is entirely necessary.

But don't let his investigative nature fool you. Duke is actually a pretty low-key guy who knows how to enjoy the finer things in life, like a good sunbathing session, some time outside, a little playtime, and hanging out with people he trusts. He has a wonderfully goofy side that comes out when he's feeling comfortable, and there is something pretty endearing about watching Duke go from quietly observing the world to suddenly deciding it's time to have some fun.

He's also got a clever little brain that loves having something to figure out. Duke is smart, food-motivated, and surprisingly focused when there's a good reason to pay attention. Give him some tasty treats and a patient person, and you'll find a dog who is eager to learn and engage. He could have a lot of fun with activities like agility or other games that let him put that brain to work, but he doesn't need to be on the go every second of the day. Duke can appreciate an adventure, but he's equally happy to spend an afternoon soaking up some sunshine.

One of the sweetest things about getting to know Duke is learning how he likes to connect with his people. He's a sensitive guy, and physical touch isn't something he takes for granted. Rather than being the dog who demands to be in your lap, Duke prefers to build trust at his own pace and appreciates people who let him choose when he's ready for affection. Once that trust is there, getting to see him relax and enjoy your company is pretty special. Duke is looking for someone who will listen to his body language, respect his boundaries, and let their relationship grow naturally.

Duke has also made some canine friends here at MAS. He's perfectly capable of enjoying a good play session with the right dog, while with others he'd rather simply coexist and mind his own business. He's not looking for every dog he meets to become his new best friend, and honestly, we can respect that.

An adult-only home with a confident, experienced handler would be the best fit for this quirky guy. Duke doesn't need someone looking for the most outgoing dog in the room. He needs someone who appreciates the quieter, more nuanced kind of connection that comes from earning a sensitive dog's trust. In return, you'll get a goofy, clever, occasionally suspicious, sun-loving companion with a whole lot of personality.

Duke may have a few theories about the world, but he's still waiting to find the people who make him feel like the world is a pretty good place after all.

Think Duke might be your kind of wonderfully weird? Submit an adoption application through the MAS website to get the process started!

DOB: 4/21/2019

For safety’s sake, we are looking for homes with physical fenced-in areas.

Please fill out our online adoption survey at www.mackenzies.info/adopt/adoption-survey-application/
