Duke's Story

Duke was unfortunately surrendered on 12/31/25 as a result of a divorce. He has been an outdoor dog guarding goats for his prior owner.

We are still learning more about Duke and will update when we can (or reach out to us to learn more).

He is neutered. He will get his shots and microchip prior to going to a new home.

We will also assess his livestock guardian skills prior to going to a LGD home. His previous owners report he kills snakes (including a cottonmouth) and possums on his past farm. He will headbutt playful billy goats. He also herds the goats but has not hurt them on his past farm. The rescue recommends a rattlesnake vaccine given his inclination to fight snakes. Our regular vet does not offer this vaccine.

Duke loves the rain and mud. His past owners report he will literally dance in the rain.

His past owners had him on inconsistent heartworm meds so he will be heartworm tested and treated prior to adoption.

Duke does not like people (especially new people) touching his collar/ neck or offering a flat hand to him (such as a flat hand with a treat). He takes treats just fine if you're pinching the treat. His past owners suggested he may have been abused by his first owners. They say he had never bitten but has given warnings when he's afraid. Many true LGDs want minimal interaction with people. He can be handled with a slip lead and travels reasonably well in the car.
