Duke's Story

Meet Duke

If you know and love working breeds, Duke may be exactly the dog you’ve been looking for.

Duke is 5 years old, 41 pounds, incredibly smart, athletic, loyal and deeply connected to his people. We originally adopted Duke as a puppy, and he has spent the last five years being absolutely adored by a wonderful couple who have given him extensive training, exercise and a great life.

Recently, they welcomed a new baby, and Duke has had a difficult time adjusting to sharing his people and such a major change in his home. After a lot of thought, everyone agrees that Duke would be happier in a home that is better suited to his personality and needs.

For someone who understands working breeds, there is so much to love about this dog.

Duke is exceptionally smart and loves to work. He has had extensive training and already knows heel, sit, stay, down and shake, and he’s working on “place.” He’s also great at agility activities and loves jumping obstacles, learning new things and having something that challenges both his brain and his body.

He loves long walks, hiking, playing ball and frisbee and being included in whatever his person is doing. Once his exercise and activity needs are met, he’s affectionate and happy to settle in and spend time with his people.

At home, Duke is potty trained, crate trained, non-destructive and comfortable being left alone.

Duke also does very well with other dogs. Smaller dogs aren't really his preference, so we think he would be happiest as the only dog or sharing his home with a compatible larger dog, such as a Lab, Doodle or similar-sized companion.

We are specifically looking for an adopter who has experience with Cattle Dogs, Shepherds, Border Collies or similar intelligent working breeds and understands what makes these dogs so special. Duke thrives with exercise, structure, continued training and engagement, and he needs an active owner who will enjoy giving him those things.

Duke is neutered, vaccinated and ready to meet his next family.

We also offer foster-to-adopt, so you can spend time with Duke and make sure you’re a great match before making the adoption official.

Call or text Soulshine Dog Rescue at 619-919-6937 to learn more or schedule a meet-and-greet with Duke.
