Duke's Story

Duke came to us from Fedwell Farms, where the Director had passed away.

Duke is a sweet, happy boy who also loves to chase and catch rubber balls. He gets so excited at the mention of a walk or car ride, that he stands up and dances on his back feet and grins. He would do well both as an only dog or with other dogs, in a family or with a single person.

More than tolerating, Duke accepts the other dogs in my house as mates. I haven't seen him physically play with any of them (my own 4 love to chase and rough-house with each other), but he does lie close to any of them on the floor and I've seen my little Chug licking his face. Duke is a very tolerant boy who loves to eat. He LOVES going for walks and is good on the leash. He pulls a bit but is easily corrected. He listens well and obeys. He loves lots of attention, neck hugs and kisses, head scratches.

Like Trixie, he's not needy, he just loves it when you give him that attention. He stretches out on the floor as close to me as he can for hours when I'm at the computer. Big as he is, he jumps onto my bed and tries to sleep with an arm or his head over my legs. This boy weighs about 90 pounds, so that's not something I can let him do. If I get out of bed for even a minute, he immediately moves into the same space I just vacated. He was very stubborn at first, but I've finally got him to where I can show him where I want him to move to by patting my hands on that spot and telling him, 'Move, Duke, move." He waits a few seconds (I can almost hear him saying, 'Do I HAVE to?'), and then he moves. In the past 2 nights, I've noticed that when he jumped onto my bed he went straight to the spot I want him to sleep and not on top of me. So, we are making progress.

Duke is a super sweet and loving boy and needs a home where he'll get frequent hugs and head scratches, a few walks each week, a ride in the backseat with the window open once in a while - and a couple of bouncy rubber balls. He's great with adults and kids, more wary of men initially but gets used to them quickly.

Want to meet Duke?

Apply at: www.hopeofdeliverance.org
Adoption fee: $175

Duke has had full dental surgery and everything necessary!
