Dotty's Story

Meet Dotty

Dotty is six years old, a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix,

He is not the dog who rushes into a room and assumes everyone came to see him. He likes to take a minute, watch what is happening, and decide for himself that you are safe. Once he does, though, you have a shadow.

Before coming into rescue, he spent most of his life confined to one room. He did not have regular walks, a yard, or much experience with the outside world. When he first arrived in foster care, everyday things felt enormous. New people were scary. Walks were unfamiliar. The world was much bigger than the room he knew.

He has made incredible progress.

These days, he is more relaxed, curious, and willing to try. He has learned that walks can be fun, cars can take you somewhere good, and people can be kind. He is crate trained and rides beautifully in the car, making him an easy companion for weekend drives, quiet errands, or a trip out of the city.

He is a true Velcro dog with the people he loves. He follows his person from room to room, settles nearby while they work, and keeps a close eye on household activities—especially anything happening in the kitchen. He is not trying to micromanage. He just feels strongly that important decisions should not be made without him.

That connection also makes him very attentive outdoors. He naturally checks in and prefers staying close to his person rather than charging off on his own. With continued training and safe, appropriate spaces, he could be a wonderful companion for someone who enjoys Bay Area trails, neighborhood walks, and low-key outdoor adventures. He does not need to summit Mount Tam every weekend, but he would be very happy to come along and supervise.

He gets along well with other dogs. He is not interested in being the loudest or busiest dog in the group. He is more of a find my person, settle in, and enjoy the day kind of guy.

New people still need to earn his trust. He probably will not climb into your lap five minutes after meeting you, and that is okay. He is looking for someone who will let the relationship unfold naturally. The reward is getting to watch him decide that you are his person—and once that happens, he is all in.

Dotty would do best in a patient, steady home with someone who appreciates a sensitive dog and will continue showing him that the world is safe. He has already done so much brave work. Now he is ready for a home where he can stop adjusting and finally belong.

He may take a little time to choose you, but once he does, you will never have to wonder where he is. He will be right beside you.

Apply to meet Dotty:
https://www.welcomehomesanctuary.org/adoption-application
