Dottie's Story

Looking for a low-maintenance, affectionate, and perfectly well-behaved companion? Meet Dottie, a 10-year-old, 12-pound bundle of love who proves that age is just a number. Dottie is the ultimate balance of a relaxed couch potato and a spunky, playful pup!

Dottie is 100% housebroken and will politely go to the door when she needs to be let out. She is also completely crate-trained and eats her meals happily inside her crate. She can be left alone in her crate for a couple of hours without a peep, but she doesn't actually need to be crated—she is not destructive and does not bark when left alone. When it’s bedtime, Dottie will sleep soundly through the entire night in her dog bed right next to you. (Though, fair warning: she would gladly sleep under the covers with you if allowed!)

Dottie has incredibly soft fur, loves being brushed, and is a big fan of belly rubs. When new people enter the home, she will trot right up to them and immediately roll over to request scratches! She is very comfortable around other canines. She currently lives peacefully with two other dogs and loves to engage in playful antics with friends her own size.

While she loves guests in the house, she can be a bit more hesitant and submissive when meeting new people outside on walks. If they reach to pet her too quickly, she may give a soft grumble to ask for space. However, if you give her just a moment to sniff and get comfortable, she will gladly invite all the pets! Because she gets nervous if people try to grab at her, she will do best in a home with older, respectful children. Her compatibility with cats is currently unknown.

Dottie knows how to "sit" and is highly food-motivated. If you have something tasty, she will stand on her hind legs and charmingly paw at the air to get your attention! She is also doing a great job learning her name and coming when called.

Dottie has a lot of life to live and behaves like a much younger dog, but she does have a couple of senior medical quirks managed easily with daily routine:
• Heart Health: She has mitral valve regurgitation, which has caused mild enlargement of part of her heart. She shows absolutely no symptoms of this, but she does require two daily medications to support her heart and keep her blood pressure in a healthy range.
• Tracheomalacia: She has a very mild condition that causes her to cough slightly if there is pressure on her throat or if she gets overly excited. It does not limit her activity at all! She walks beautifully on a leash with a harness that pulls from the chest rather than the neck.
• Upcoming Care: Dottie will be fully spayed and receive a dental cleaning before heading to her forever home.

Dottie enjoys two 20-minute walks a day and loves having the freedom to wander around a secure yard. Once her walks are done, she is perfectly content to spend the rest of the day lounging on the couch next to you or resting at your feet.

If you are looking for a super sweet, cuddly, and deeply loyal companion to brighten your days, Dottie is ready to meet you!

If you'd like to be considered to adopt, the first step in the process is to submit an application through our website: http://athenscaninerescue.com/adoption-procedures/. Our adoption fee is $250 per dog over the age of 6 months and $300 per dog 6 months or younger. We accept payment by Venmo, PayPal, or card.

This includes: basic vet care (i.e. basic vaccinations, including boosters completed after adoption, spay/neuter, heartworm/flea preventatives, and treatment for any health needs while in our care), a microchip, a weeks' worth of food for the trial-period, and a harness lead.

All in state applications will be considered with some preference given to more local applications. WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING OUT OF STATE APPLICATIONS FOR DOGS SIX MONTHS OR YOUNGER.

We do not have a facility and operate through a network of foster homes. Thus, we do not have a phone number. If you'd like to discuss potential adoptions, please email at adopt@athenscaninerescue.com.
