Dooley's Story

DOOLEY AND HIS BEST FRIENDS WILL ATTEND A MEET AND GREET ADOPTION EVENT AT PET EVOLUTION AT 1074 GRAND ON SUNDAY JANUARY 18 12:30 -2:30. WE COULD ALL USE A PUPPY CUDDLE RIGHT NOW. YOU MIGHT EVEN WANT TO HAVE A PERMANENT PUP TO CUDDLE. COME FOR A CUDDLE AND MAYBE GO HOME WITH A FRIEND FOR LIFE.

Dooley is a fuzzy black pup who is taking well to city life after living outdoors in an extremely remote rural area. Dooley was part of a litter of pups born in a family with several adult and teenaged dogs. When mommy and daddy dogs got into a confrontation with an unhappy porcupine, the owner contacted a local rescue for help. The local organization arranged for PUP to vaccinate all of the puppies and adult dogs and take the puppies into our program. They agreed to pay for the adults to be altered and have the quills removed. PUP treated the adult male with a chewable flea and tick medication and we were afraid his mouth was so full of quills he would not be able to swallow it, but he managed.

The vet aged Dooley at 10 weeks on January 13. We are guessing at breed here. He is surely part Aussie or Cattle dog. His coat is very thick and soft. Dogs from the area who have DNA testing often have 20 or more breeds and they nearly always have some shepherd, husky, Miniature American Shepherd, cattle dog, Aussie, and even the largest pooches have a bit of Chihuahua. We estimate that Dooley will be in the upper end of mid-sized dog when full grown. His people should be prepared to love him if he is larger or smaller than predicted.

Dooley came from a family with children, other dogs and cats. He loves his outdoor play time and is more than happy to come back inside to a warm house and comfy bed. He had been living mostly outside in his previous home. We are starting work on house breaking but it is a work in progress.

The early months are when puppy learns the social skills needed to be a skilled dog in dealing with other dogs and a good citizen in the human world. Adopters should be committed to getting puppy into lots of new and different human social situations, hearing vacuums, trucks, and rattling garbage cans, meeting people who are clapping, laughing, with hats, tools, bikes and skate boards. AND puppy needs many opportunities to meet and greet dogs of all shapes, sizes and dispositions. Just sharing a home with another dog is not as much doggie socializing as puppy needs. If good canine social skills are not learned and maintained during these early months, it will be very difficult to ever master them. Puppy play dates, trips to the pet store, puppy socialization classes and later, obedience classes are particularly important. If all this doggie time and involvement seems like a good idea, you are up for a puppy! As always, a tired dog is a good dog.

Puppy has been vet checked, is vaccinated including rabies, and de-wormed. He will need two additional puppy vaccinations at the adopter’s expense. We do place puppies outside the metro area if a firm plan for the alter surgery is in place; we do not ship. His required alter surgery is covered by the adoption fee if it is done at 6 months at the PUP clinic. We require that he be altered at 6 months.

If you are at least 21 years old and everyone in your household is on board with adopting a puppy, CALL 651-645-4370 between 7:00 am and 9:30 pm and we will return your call within 24 hours. We are pretty slow at responding to e-mail. Renters must provide proof that you are allowed to have a puppy. If you currently have a companion dog or cat please be prepared to provide a vet reference prior to adoption if requested.
