Dolly's Story

From rags to rhinestones.

Dolly entered the shelter so severely matted that she needed an emergency medical shave. She was covered in fleas, full of parasites, and suffering from flaky, infected skin beneath the mats. Her little body showed the unmistakable signs of having been used repeatedly for breeding. During her spay, the veterinarian also discovered a nonviable pregnancy. After the mats were removed, Dolly was a full pound lighter.

Those days are over.

Meet Dolly, a 4.22-pound Yorkie with ears almost as big as she is—and yes, they definitely work. Dolly stays alert to any shenanigans happening around the house and makes sure the rest of the pack knows about them, but she is not a nonstop yapper. When someone new arrives, she simply wants to go say hello. She has been friendly with every adult and child she has met.

Estimated to be 2–3 years old, Dolly is tiny, social, affectionate, and extremely “my person” motivated. She follows her foster mom around without getting underfoot and wants to be wherever her people are. When she walks, she does an adorable high-stepping prance. When asked if she is ready for dinner or needs to go outside, she dances on her back legs to communicate her enthusiasm. She knows how to strut her stuff, work a room, and pose for her glamour shots. She will even cooperate while you dress her up. Dolly is, quite literally, the perfect purse dog.

Dolly lives with dogs of all sizes and coexists beautifully with the entire pack. She snuggles with the other dogs, eats alongside them, and even plays with Bubba, the resident bulldog. She is also smart enough to move out of the way when the big dogs get too energetic. She would enjoy having another friendly dog in her new home, but she would also be perfectly happy as the only dog as long as she has her person.

She can live with a confident, dog-savvy cat, but she does sometimes get excited and give chase. Her favorite target is Chilly, who turns around and chases her back—at which point Dolly screams in terror over the consequences of her own decisions. A home with a cat who is easily frightened or likely to run would not be the right fit.

At bedtime, Dolly does not sleep in a kennel. She sleeps in bed, where her foster mom wraps her up like a tiny empanada with only her nose poking out. She may occasionally snuggle with the other dogs, but she also has a favorite burrow spot all her own.

Dolly is potty trained when kept on a consistent schedule. She should be taken directly outside first thing in the morning and offered regular potty breaks throughout the day. If she has an accident, it is typically right beside the door because she was trying to make it outside. On the rare occasion she needs to poop indoors, she has selected her foster dad’s bathroom as the appropriate emergency facility. If her adopter works longer hours, she would likely adjust well to a potty pad placed near the door.

She has not been destructive and currently relaxes loose with the other dogs when her foster family is away. She has not needed to be kenneled. She rides nicely in the car, is cooperative for grooming, and is currently so small that she wears a kitten-sized harness.

Dolly is not especially interested in toys, although it is difficult to know how much opportunity she has had since Bubba commandeers them all. She would choose time with her person over a toy anyway. She also has what we’ll call a refined palate: she prefers wet food and does not appreciate yesterday’s meal being served again after a night in the refrigerator.

Although Dolly has done well with children, because of her extremely small size, we are seeking a home with children age 10 or older. At only 4.22 pounds, she must be directly supervised whenever she is outside and will not be placed in a home that relies on a dog door. Large birds of prey and other predators can pose a real danger to a dog this tiny.

Dolly has a big personality packed into a remarkably small body. She can be playful and animated, but overall, she is an easy little companion who wants to stay close to her person, burrow under the blankets, and be included in whatever comes next.
