Dixie's Story

Location: Newark DE with foster
Dog name: Dixie (affectionately Dixie Doodle)
Gender: Spayed girl
Age/weight: 8, 23 pounds (is on a strict weight loss diet with frozen green beans and weight management food)
Breed: Chihuahua Mix
Heartworm status: Negative
Medications/Injuries: Just had a mammary removed, stage 1 cancer but clean margins (even for a lymph node tested and didnt spread), cherry eye surgery (they can come back),cyst removal (tested and was fine), getting teeth cleaned and extracted May 20th
Good with people? Mostly great with kisses but nips if trying to open her mouth for a medication (pill pockets!)
Children? No though she loves children she nips on occasion, so better safe than sorry!
Dogs? Fine with them but prefers lots of attention
Cats? Good with cats
Other animals? Unknown
House trained? Mostly, some rare accidents
Crate trained? Yes, but doesnt need
Energy level: Low
Travel well? Yes
Favorite toy/activity: Following her fosters lol She will play very gently with all types of toys
Leash trained? Mostly but needs practice
Fence required? No

Dixie is a very sweet girl looking for a patient, understanding home that can appreciate her little quirks. She recently had a stage 1 cancerous mass removed with clean margins, which is great news, but we believe its important to be transparent about her medical history. She also had a cherry eye surgery.

Dixie is not aggressive and does not bite, but she can be a little nippy when being given medication, so we are recommending an adult-only home with no children. Shes also still working on her potty habits and may have occasional accidents despite doing well most of the time.

Overall, Dixie is a loving dog who just needs the right family willing to give her patience, understanding, and lots of love.

She loves lots of attention but will rest quietly without complaint. If you want a lap dog she will gladly accept.

House of Hope Animal Rescue's Adoption Policy
House of Hope Animal Rescue is foster-based. We are not a shelter and do not own a kennel where our dogs are kept. All of our dogs are in foster homes. Once your application is approved, your adoption coordinator will assist you in scheduling a date and time to meet dogs you are interested in at their foster homes. You must be willing to travel to the foster homes to meet potential dogs. Thanks for your understanding. APPLICATION PROCESS All potential adopters are required to complete an adoption application. That can be done online or you can download and complete then mail or email it to us. Once your application is received, we’ll call your references, including your Veterinarian. All of your pets must be current on vaccines and on preventatives.? Once all references are checked, we will get in touch with you to schedule a phone interview to go over your application and our adoption procedures. You may be contacted via email, so please keep an eye on your inbox, junk, and spam folders. Please know that we will reach out to you as soon as possible, but it can take up to 14 days depending on the volume of applications we are receiving. Please be patient with us.? After the phone interview we will set up a time for one of our volunteers to conduct a home visit. This is to ensure that your home is a safe environment for a dog and is the final step in the approval process.? Once your application is approved, you are ready to begin meeting dogs! Because we want each dog to go to the right forever home, it is not guaranteed that you will be approved for the dog for which you applied. In this case, we will work with you so that the right match is made for everyone involved. House of Hope spends a lot of time getting to know each dog so they can be placed with a family they are appropriate for as well as a family that is appropriate for them.?
