Dino's Story

Meet Dino, a 2.5yr old boy who hails from the Netherlands and has lots of happy dog energy to share! He’s a well balanced dog with lots of confidence though blind. He has not always been blind, its a new thing for him. Dino has seen 2 eye specialists who believe he may see shadows. But his sight does not deter him from being an exceptional dog that everyone who meets him doesn’t instantly fall in love with him.

He loves people (young and old) and other dogs; everyone he meets loves him. He’s very social and would do well with a buddy. Dino does occasionally run into his foster dog sister who shakes it off so any dogs in the house would need to be ok with Dino’s unintentional bumps. Being a big boy, he could easily knock down young children (and trip over toys left on the floor).

He’s house and crate trained. He rides well crated in the car. He likes going places with lots of sniffs as he “sees” the world through his nose like most canines do. He knows sit and has an ok recall. His leash walking isn’t so bad either. He loves a tennis ball and, using his nose, can find it in the yard.

Because he’s blind he does need someone who is patient and able to watch out for him as he’s exploring the world around him to ensure he doesn’t run into objects (fire hydrants, benches, trees, etc.), step into holes or trip over curbs/steps. He mapped out my house within a few days and comfortably navigates through it, of course the rooms are Dino proofed so he won’t run into sharp edges or items that might hurt him. Clutter is not good for Dino.

Dino would love his human to be mostly home and provide him with enrichment activities keeping him busy and mentally active as he is a working dog. He’d be a great scent work, Rally-O and/or, with the appropriate training, therapy dog visiting hospitals or schools. This boy will make someone a great companion. His person just needs to keep him safe and mentally stimulated.

Dino is being fostered in Charlottesville, VA – if interested in learning more, please fill out an adoption application at http://mdgsprescue.org/adoption-application
