Dex's Story

We are so excited to introduce you to Dex!
BASICS: 1.5 years old, 9.5 pound blond chihuahua mix. Foster mom has been doing research, and she thinks he may be part Portuguese Podengo Pequeno. We know that's a rare breed, especially here in the USA, but Dex has the looks and traits of that breed. He is 90% potty trained; sleeps through the night in foster's bed with no accidents (he's a GREAT sleeper); leash trained; fine with men and women; needs a slow introduction to larger dogs: kids over 6 should be ok, as long as they are gentle with him.
PERSONALITY: Dex is where "long walks on the beach" and "snuggled up by the fire" meet. He is a snugglebug and he LOVES to be outside!! Every goose, duck, egret, wood duck, hummingbird, or squirrel that talks within his hearing distance is fascinating to him! When he isn't succumbing to his nature addiction, he is learning how fun it is to run zoomies, then take a long nap. He just started showing signs of wanting to play in the last 2 days so we are still learning how he prefers to play. He barks a bit but only when he feels it is really necessary and he does several warm-ups (LOL) before the actual bark so we have time to check things out and correct to avoid him being a nuisance.
CONSIDERATIONS: Dex has been through a lot, so he will need time to adjust to new people, house, and schedule. He loves to make eye contact and needs physical touch regularly. He needs a lot of security and reassurance of that security so any correction must be gentle, he needs to be eased in to being left home alone, and he needs to be in a calm household with someone who can take him out to keep him socialized while knowing the boundary between uncomfortable and overwhelmed. Dex may have a bit of a learning curve in his new home, but he is so worth the time and effort!
Please submit your application, and an adoption counselor will contact you.
