Denny - ADOPTED's Story
Denny is a Labrador Retriever, Basenji and Formosan Mountain Dog Mix from the country of Taiwan. He is about 4 years old and currently weighs 59.47 pounds (as of 8/5/2025); he is fully-grown.

Denny’s rescue story:

One day, a rescuer saw a post on FB asking for help. It said a dog had been caught in a bear trap for several days at the junction of a mountainous area and farmland. It was August, one of the hottest months in Taiwan, and the dog was so exhausted that almost fell into a coma. But the rescuer’s area was three hours away, so she contacted a nearby rescue group and asked them to help her to rescue the dog first, and she would take care of the follow-up. The dog was named Denny.

Fortunately, Denny did not suffer from any other diseases except malnutrition and dehydration. Even more fortunately, his right front paw that was caught in the trap did not need to be amputated, but he lost two toes, which did not affect his daily activities.

The rescuer believed that Denny must be a family pet because he was affectionate and got along with people, but he must have been abused. There is a circle of wide scar around Denny’s nose, indicating that he had worn a muzzle for a long time without being taken off, and the muzzle cut the skin and left a deep wound.

Denny’s completed medical information:

Denny has passed the following medical tests: distemper, SNAP 4Dx, CBC, Biochemistry blood work, Giardia, and a PCR test for diseases and infections transmitted by fleas or ticks. He has also received x-rays on hips and joints; he does not have hip dysplasia or floating kneecaps. He will have teeth cleaned before coming to the US.

Denny is micro-chipped, neutered, de-wormed, up to date on rabies and distemper vaccines. He is heartworm negative and has been on monthly prevention. All Denny's medical documents including the x-rays films on hips will be given to his adopter when he is adopted.

Denny's temperaments and personality:

Denny’s scar on the nose is like a totem that will always remind us that Denny had experienced the pain of being abused and then ruthlessly abandoned. Even with such rough start to his life, Denny still loves and trusts people. His temperament and personality are very similar to that of the Labrador Retriever.

Denny has been fostered by a family that has three cats and many other dogs since being rescued. He gets along well with both dogs and cats, but he is more people-oriented. He is friendly to dogs, but he usually does not play with them. He does not chase cats, but sometimes he would initiate play with cats.

People are still Denny’s favorite. His foster mom said that Denny is a great companion dog. Every time when she was doing housework, Denny always lies quietly beside her, but when he sees she eating, he quickly sits up and waits. Denny loves to eat, but he never fights with other dogs for food. If a dog wants to eat his food and he doesn’t want the food anymore, he won’t get upset and will let the dog have it.

Denny is not the kind of dog that shows passionate towards people, but he is always calm and quiet, and you don’t have to worry about him causing trouble in any environment. Sometimes, the foster mom would take Denny to the traditional market to buy food; she recalled that Denny was a little shy and nervous when he walked in the crowd for the first time, but he was still very calm and well-behaved.

Denny remained calm when he went to the hospital for vaccine shots or blood draw; even he was scared, he just looked at the vet with wide eyes.

Denny is also very loving to the little children. There were a few times when the foster mom took Denny to visit her relatives or friends, who all happened to have young children. She found that Denny was very gentle when interacting with these toddlers. Some of these children were seeing such a big dog for the first time, but they were not afraid of Denny.

But Denny is not a good guard dog. The foster mom said Denny is too friendly to strangers; whenever they have guests over, Denny never barks. Although he would not passionately approach them, he would happily wag his tail to greet them, and then not long after, he would lie down and let the guests rub his belly.

The foster family lives not far from the beach, they often take Denny and other dogs to the beach on weekends; Denny does not show particular interest in playing in the water. He does not play with toys or chew anything, but sometimes he chews on cloth.

Denny is 100% house broken. The foster mom said he is very clean, and he never has any accidents in the house. If no one lets him out potty, he would hold it in for 14 hours.

Denny is not food or toys aggressive or possessive towards people, dogs or cats. He does not have separation anxiety and is not scared of thunderstorms, fireworks, or other noises.

Denny will be great with a moderately active family. He does not require a lot of outdoor activities, but he still needs some low-impact exercises every day to maintain his physical and mental health. Although Denny gets along with toddlers, we prefer the family that has children older than 5 years old.

Denny loves car rides and enjoys going out to meet different people. We hope Denny’s new family can include Denny into your daily activities and enjoy taking him for your outings, day trips or short vacations, rather than just taking him for walks around the neighborhood or playing in the yard. We really hope that Denny can have a chance to experience different parts of his life that he had missed before.

Where is Denny and how to meet him?

Denny is still in Taiwan and will be scheduled to come to the US once we find a promised adopter; he will be staying with our foster family in North Wilmington Delaware after his arrival. If you are seriously thinking of giving Denny a loving permanent home, please contact us for an application form. Because all of our rescue dogs are living with our foster family, we do not accept stop-by visits if you are interested in seeing our dogs. Before meeting Denny, the prospective adopter needs to complete the application and be approved.

More videos of Denny are as follow:

1.
