Delilah's Story
Delilah – She Was Out of Time, Until We Gave Her a Second Chance

Delilah was on death row. When we found her at a high-kill shelter in Bakersfield, she was barely holding on—scared, depressed, and shut down in a loud, overcrowded kennel. Her once-beautiful coat was matted into painful dreadlocks, and it was clear she had lost hope. She had been discarded, forgotten, and left to fade away. If we hadn’t stepped in, she wouldn’t be here today.

But Delilah’s story wasn’t meant to end in a cold shelter. Since coming into our care, she has transformed into the most loving, goofy, and affectionate dog. At 80 pounds, she may be big, but she is just a giant baby who wants nothing more than to love and be loved. She leans into you, gently nibbling with her front teeth like she’s trying to hold onto you forever. She’ll rest her head against your stomach, gazing up at you with soft eyes, quietly asking for affection. She is pure love in its silliest, most joyful form.

Delilah does have some nerve damage that affects her front limb, making her a little clumsy. But after thorough vet evaluations, we know she doesn’t need surgery—she is happy just the way she is. Surgery would be painful, with little benefit, and we refuse to put her through unnecessary suffering when she gets around just fine and doesn’t let it slow her down. She’s discovered toys for the first time in her life and loves to carry them around, lying down with them like treasured possessions. Every moment with her is filled with laughter and love.

Delilah enjoys the company of other dogs but would prefer to be the only pet in her forever home—she wants to be the center of your world. And she deserves that. She is safe now, but as long as she stays with us, we can’t rescue the next dog in desperate need. High-kill shelters in our area hold over 300 dogs at any given time, and every day, more are added to the euthanasia list. Giving Delilah a home isn’t just saving her—it opens the door for another dog who wouldn’t otherwise make it out alive.

If you’re looking for a dog who will make you laugh, keep you company, and love you with her whole heart, Delilah is waiting. She is ready for the next chapter in her story—the one where she is finally home. Could that be with you?

Apply today and give Delilah the forever home she has been waiting for.
